TO: Honorable Mayor and Members of the City Council

ATTENTION: Jeffrey L. Stewart, City Manager

FROM: Len Gorecki, Assistant City Manager/Director of Public Works Jerry Stock, City Engineer

SUBJECT: Consideration and possible action to authorize the Director of Public Works, or designee, to install red curb parking restrictions on Somerset Boulevard and Betty Jean Avenue (C.E. #21-01).

DATE: February 13, 2023

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

This action would approve and authorize the installation of red curb parking restrictions on Somerset Boulevard and Betty Jean Avenue pursuant to Bellflower Municipal Code (“BMC”) Chapter 10.04.

RECOMMENDATION TO CITY COUNCIL

1) Authorize the Director of Public Works, or designee, to install red curb parking restrictions on Somerset Boulevard and Betty Jean Avenue; or

2) Alternatively, discuss and take other action related to this item.

FISCAL IMPACT

The estimated cost to install the red curb parking restrictions is $200.00. The required funds are contained within the current fiscal year budget.

DISCUSSION

The City recently received a request to install red curb parking restrictions on Somerset Boulevard just east of Betty Jean Avenue. The basis of the request is to improve the line of sight for vehicles entering Somerset Boulevard from Betty Jean Avenue.

Currently vehicles parked within the proposed red zone block the line of sight. In response to this request, and to create an improved line of sight and enhance safety, the City is proposing to install sixty feet (60’) of red curb parking restrictions. The proposed change is illustrated on the attached aerial photograph.
