ATTENTION: Jeffrey L. Stewart, City Manager

FROM: Len Gorecki, Assistant City Manager/Director of Public Works

DATE: March 13, 2023

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

The City has recently experienced costly copper wire thefts involving the pedestrian lights along the MTA Bike Trail as well as at Palm Street Park. Staff has consulted with Willdan Engineering and South Coast Lighting on converting the existing light fixtures to solar-power as well as other solar-powered light fixtures currently available on the market that could be incorporated onto the existing poles.

RECOMMENDATION TO CITY COUNCIL

1) Provide direction to staff regarding future usage of solar-powered light fixtures on the MTA Bike Trail and at Palm Street Park; or

2) Alternatively, discuss and take other action related to this item.

FISCAL IMPACT

Depending on whether the existing fixtures are retrofitted or new fixtures are utilized, the estimated cost will range between $2,000 - $6,000 per light fixture. This project is not part of the current year budget. If approved, a Capital Improvement Project account will be created and the budget will be established.

DISCUSSION

Staff has obtained estimated costs from Willdan Engineering and South Coast Lighting to retrofit existing pedestrian light fixtures to solar-power as well as estimated costs for new solar-powered light fixtures that are similar in style to the existing light fixtures for both the MTA Bike Trail and Palm Street Park.
