SUBJECT: Consideration and possible action to authorize the Director of Public Works, or designee, to install an on-street disabled parking space (blue curb) at 9627 Olive Street (C.E.# 23-10).

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
On June 20, 2023, the Public Safety Commission considered an d subsequently recommended to the City Council the installation of an on -street disabled parking space (blue curb) pursuant to Bellflower Municipal Code (“BMC”) Chapter 10.04 . This action would approve and authorize the installation of the on-street disabled parking space (blue curb) at 9627 Olive Street.
RECOMMENDATION TO CITY COUNCIL
1) Authorize the Director of Public Works, or designee, to install the on-street disabled parking space (blue curb) at 9627 Olive Street; or
2) Alternatively, discuss and take other action related to this item.
FISCAL IMPACT
The estimated cost to install the on-street disabled parking space is $300.00. The required funds are contained within the current fiscal year budget.
DISCUSSION
The City recently received a request from the resident at 9627 Olive Street to install one on-street disabled parking space (blue curb). In response to this request, the City Engineer conducted a site visit and discussed the matter with the resident to better understand the need for the blue curb. Since both the resident and her husband suffer from medical conditions and possess disabled placards, they are requesting an on - street disabled parking space in addition to the space currently available in their driveway.

DISCUSSION – Continued
The subject property is a single-family home with a detached garage in the rear. Due to the limited mobility by both residents, the shortest accessible path of travel for a second disabled driver is on-street parking. Hence the installation of a twenty (20) foot on-street disabled parking space is recommended. The location of the proposed blue curb is illustrated on the attached aerial photograph.
On June 7, 2023, the City provided notice to area residents of this request and that this matter would be brought before the Public Safet y Commission at its June 20, 2023, meeting. To date the City has received no response to the notification.
