TERMS, & DEFINITIONS
❖Cold-in-Place Recycling (CIPR)
❖Cold Central Plant Recycling (CCPR)
❖Recycled Asphalt Pavement (RAP)
❖Reclaimed aggerate material (RAM)
❖Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA)
❖Full Depth Reclamation (FDR)
❖Asphalt Recycling Agent-
❖ They are hydrocarbon products with physical and chemical characteristics selected to restore aged asphalt cements.
Bitumen emulsion is the most common.

WHAT IS CIPR?
❖ Utilized since the 1930’s
❖ Gained popularity during the 1970’s oil crisis
❖ A portion of the asphalt pavement layer is repurposed by ❖ Pulverizing pavement layers
❖ Mixing with a recycling agent (foamed or emulsified asphalt) ❖ Repaving in place
❖ Only occurs within the existing asphalt roadway
❖ Uses 100 percent of the RAP generated during the process ❖ Typical treatment depths are 3 to 4 inches to max of 8 inches ❖ Train can be a single-unit, two-unit or multi-unit
❖ New aggregate may be added to improve mixture properties 2023 PAVING REHAB PROJECT | 3
WHEN IT CAN BE USED
❖ Alligator Cracking
❖ Eliminate Rutting
❖ Dry Raveled
❖ Patched Roads
❖ Restore Road Crown 2023 PAVING REHAB PROJECT | 4
WHERE IT CAN BE USED
❖ Runways
❖ Highways
❖ Multilane Roads
❖ Urban Arterials
❖ Rural Roads
❖ Residential Roads

❖ Mixed to produce a homogeneous recycled material
BENEFITS OF CIPR
❖ Saves on Materials & Material Costs
❖ Conserves Non-renewable Natural Resources
❖ Saves on Energy Used
❖ Significant GHG emission reduction, no haul off
& dispose
❖ Reduces Truck Trips & Truck Traffic by a 30:1 ratio
❖ Less Disruption to The Public & to Abutting
Properties
❖ Reduces Project Duration by approximately 30%
❖ Reduces The Rehabilitation Cost-Per SF by 30%-50%
Over Reconstruction
❖ Increases Integrity of The Pavement’s Structural

RALSTON CIPR PROJECT DETAILS
2023 PAVING REHAB PROJECT | 8
• DURATION: 9 WEEKS
• WORK HOURS: 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM
• PROJECT COST: $2M
• PROS OF CIPR METHOD:
• LESS CONSTRUCTION TRAFFIC AND MATERIAL TRACKING
• COST REDUCTION BY 30% VS OTHER METHODS
• SUSTAINABLE AND ENVIRONMENTALLY SAFE METHOD OF CONSTRUCTION • MAKING STRONGER SUB-BASE VS REGULAR MILL AND OVERLAY
• EXTENDED LONGETIVITY OF PAVEMENT (UP TO 25 YEARS)
• TWO-WAY TRAFFIC AND ACCESS MAINTAINED DURING CONSTRUCTION • CONS OF CIPR METHOD:
• LONG EQUIPMENT TRAIN (~ 450 FEET) MAY TEMPORARILY BLOCK ACCESS • SOME CONTRACTORS MAY NOT SPECIALIZE IN THE METHOD
