FOR WATER CONSERVATION

RECOMMENDATION
Staff recommends that City Council move to support the Wyland National Mayor’s Challenge for Water Conservation.

INTRODUCTION
The Wyland Foundation (“Wyland”) is a California non-profit organization that has helped children and families around the nation rediscover the importance of healthy oceans and waterways through public art programs, classroom science education and live events.

This is the fifth year that the City of Beverly Hills will participate in the Wyland National Mayor’s Water Conservation challenge. In partnership with Toyota and support from the U.S. EPA WaterSense, The Toro Company, the National League of Cities, Conserva Irrigation and Earth Friendly Products (makers of ECOS), Wyland is gearing up for the ninth year of its National Mayor’s Challenge for Water Conservation. DISCUSSION The nationwide competition, presented by the Wyland Foundation and a half dozen other supporters, addresses the growing importance of educating consumers about the many ways they use water. The annual, month-long campaign goes from April 1st to April 30th. With inspiration from their Mayors, residents are encouraged to register their pledge to make water efficient behavioral changes and reduce pollution as a personal decision, which compounds as a collective effort by their neighbors pledging as well.

Staff will promote the City’s participation in Wyland’s Challenge in the weeks leading up to April 2022, then follow-up with community outreach throughout the month of April, •

Minimal funding will be used to help promote the program and is not anticipated to exceed $1,500 for advertising. The City will leverage social media for the majority of the public outreach. Funding for this program is budgeted in the Water Enterprise Fund under the Water Conservation program.
