RECOMMENDATION
Staff recommends that City Council move to accept the described contract work with J.A.
Urban, Inc., and authorize the City Clerk to record the attached Notice of Completion.
INTRODUCTION
On October 22, 2021, an accident was reported of a vehicle crashing into the North wall on Level 4 of the parking structure located at 9510 Brighton Way. The crash caused façade and minor structural damage. The Fire and Community Development Departments inspected the structure the day of the accident and determined that the building was safe to maintain open for normal operations. Damage sustained to the structure was evaluated by the structural engineering firm of Brandow & Johnston. After review of conditions, they determined that the damage was minor and did not pose any serious structural implications.
DISCUSSION
Drawings and specifications for the repair work were prepared by the consultant and the work has been completed. The work included repairing concrete slab and interior damaged steel guardrails rails, as well as replacement of a damaged section of the exterior wall and painting of the affected façade bays. Public Works inspected the work and are satisfied that all work has been performed consistent with construction documents.
After evaluating existing field conditions, the contractor did not need to perform a portion of the scope of work, which resulted in a credit change order in the amount of $1,188. Also there were no additional change orders, as a result the contingency amount of $31,437 was not used, therefore the total saving on this project amounts to $32,625.
Public Works is working with Risk Management to file a subrogation claim with the responsible party’s insurance carrier to recover expenses on this project including construction, consultant and internal staff expenses. FISCAL IMPACT Funding for this work was covered as part of Fund 810 Capital Improvement Program (CIP 00815), Miscellaneous and Unplanned Construction Projects. The total contract amount is $241,019, which includes a contingency amount of $31,437. There were no additional costs due to change orders; the total project cost amounts to $208,394, therefore $32,625 will be credited back to the original funding source.
The current amount paid on the contract is $197,974.30 with a retention balance of $10,419.70 to be paid 35 days after the recordation of the Notice of Completion.
