INTRODUCTION
This item is at the request of Mayor Lili Bosse and Councilmember John A. Mirisch for City Council to hear a presentation regarding educational programming for Jewish American Heritage Month in May.
DISCUSSION
Mayor Bosse returned from the Combatting Anti-Semitism Conference which was held in Greece from November 30 – December 1, 2022. At the December 6, 2022, City Council meeting the conference was summarized, and an interest was shared by members of City Council in programming for Jewish American Heritage Month.
Staff has been in contact with representatives from the North American Affairs Office of the Combat Antisemitism Movement (CAM) to explore ways that Beverly Hills can participate and provide programming that aligns with their mission. CAM is a non-partisan, global grassroots movement of individuals and organizations across all faiths and religions, united to combat antisemitism.
Since 1996, the President of the United States has proclaimed May as Jewish American Heritage Month, and cities and states have begun to follow suit. Below are proposed ways the City of Beverly Hills can provide education and programming in honor of Jewish American Heritage Month:
- Proclaim May as Jewish American Heritage Month at a City Council Meeting - During the month of May, the Beverly Hills Public Library will display relevant titles in the collection
- Create a bibliography list of resources that can be located on the City’s website - A special music performance will be hosted at the Farmer’s Market in May - Host a Critical Conversation event with the Human Relations Commission in honor of Jewish American Heritage Month
Meeting Date: March 7, 2023
FISCAL IMPACT
Proposed programming can be absorbed within both Community Services and Policy and Management approved operating budgets for Fiscal Year ’22-‘23. If additional programming is desired by City Council, a request for funding may be brought forward at a future date.
RECOMMENDATION
It is recommended that City Council review and approve educational programming in honor of Jewish American Heritage Month.

Interim Director of Community Services
