Subject: Recreation and Parks Commission Interview Panel Report Attachments: None
INTRODUCTION
The Recreation and Parks Commission (RPC) Interview Panel met on Monday, August 14, 2023 to interview 9 (nine) applicants for one upcoming vacancy on the commission.
The panel consisted of Mayor Julian A. Gold, M.D., Vice Mayor Lester J. Friedman, RPC Chair Myra Lurie and Vice Chair Amie Sherry.
This report provides information regarding the panel recommendation for the Recreation and Parks Commission. In all, there are three recommendations provided to the City Council for consideration.
DISCUSSION
The interview panel considered the following when providing their recommendations:
a) planned vacancy for Commissioner Myra Lurie’s seat (term concludes on December 31, 2023);
b) unplanned vacancy as a result of Commissioner Susan Mishler’s resignation (term concludes on June 30, 2024).
The panel recommended that Commissioner Lurie extend her commission service under Commissioner Mishler’s term which is set to conclude on June 30, 2024. The panel was of the opinion that an extension of Commissioner Lurie’s term should be recommended so that there is a smooth transition and sharing of institutional knowledge for the group.
The recommendations are as follows:
• Commissioner Myra Lurie
Original Term Concludes: December 31, 2023
Extension Recommendation: July 1, 2024
Would fill vacant seat of former Commissioner Susan Mishler. • Tara Riceberg (Term begins: January 1, 2024)
Outgoing Commissioner Myra Lurie’s seat
Meeting Date: September 12, 2023
• Richard Zale Rubins
Term begins: July 1, 2024
He would take past commissioner Susan Mishler’s seat. Commissioner Lurie’s extension would also conclude at that time.
All newly appointed candidates must attend all Recreation and Parks Commission meetings leading up to their appointment. If approved, Tara Riceberg will be eligible for an initial two-year term from January 1, 2024 to December 31, 2025. Richard Zale Rubins will be eligible for an initial two-year term from July 1, 2024 to June 30, 2026.
