Please read this at Tuesday night’s city council meeting.
Unfortunately, a lot of residents don’t have much faith in the campaign rules which appear to be unenforceable.
They say that candidates spend and take in whatever they feel like and then file inaccurate reports, and that speaking up about it will not make any difference.
The spending limits are already high. $80K is enough to send out a number of fliers at the approximate cost of about $7K each, with plenty of funds left over. Residents do not wish to be deluged with fliers or see that many cable TV ads anyway. If someone can’t get elected spending $80K, they probably did not start early enough, work hard enough, or have what it takes to get elected.
Why further inflation?
The move to raise election spending limits only insures that wealthier residents and/or those supported by wealthy developers will significantly increase their advantage over other good candidates with less funding.
Leave the limits as they are. Also, impose some fines for violations, including ineligibility to serve, because there are no teeth in the rules as they are.

As residence of Beverly Hills for more than 50 years, we do not agree with raising the spending limit from 80k to 100k, and candidate contributions from $450 to $500 per person. Such raises will insure that wealthy candidates, and candidates supported by wealthy developers will more likely be elected. This may discourage many people wanting to serve our city, but cannot afford the the cost to run for office.
Please oppose the campaign spending raises.
