INTRODUCTION
This report provides a preview of the City’s upcoming events to celebrate National Bike Month.
DISCUSSION
National Bike Month was established in 1956 to showcase the many benefits of bicycling — and encourage more people to give biking a try. The City invites residents to participate in upcoming events throughout May to celebrate cycling as a sustainable, healthy, and fun form of transportation. More details are available at www.beverlyhills.org/bikes. “Make Every Ride Count” Commuter Challenge
From May 1-31, 2024, join the movement to create safer, more bike-friendly streets with the Bike Month Challenge and #MakeEveryRideCount. Download the “Love to Ride” app at the website above, track your rides and biking accomplishments, and provide feedback on your bike trips to be eligible for prizes all month long. Everyone is invited to take part – from regular riders to people who haven’t been on a bike in years (or ever)! More information is available at:

On Saturday, May 4, 2024 from 9:30 AM to 12:30 PM, join the City of Beverly Hills to kick-off National Bike Month with a galaxy-themed community bike ride suitable for all bicycling abilities.
This family-friendly event will begin with free safety inspections and minor bike repairs on a first come, first served basis. Participants who decorate their bicycles will receive an “out of this world” prize. Costumes are highly encouraged!
National Bike and Walk to School Day
On Wednesday, May 8, 2024, join students and families across the U.S. in biking, walking, or rolling to school this day. Participants are invited to celebrate the joy of active commuting while

building a sense of community and school spirit. Whether addressing the need to make routes to school safer for active trips or encouraging children and teens to be more active, these events can be powerful tools to inspire lasting change. Of course, they are also fun! Schools and families that are interested in hosting a Bike and Walk to School Day event should contact the City to find out how we can help.
National Bike to Work Day
On Thursday, May 16, 2024 from 7:30 AM to 9:30 AM in Beverly Gardens Park (N. Santa Monica Blvd/Cañon Dr), join commuters throughout the U.S. in biking to work this day. Take a break along your way and grab a snack at the City’s pit stop. We will also have exciting giveaways and safety tips to help you make riding to work a new healthy habit.
Free Bike Repairs and Used Bicycle Collection at Public Works Day On Sunday, May 19, 2024 from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM as part of Public Works Day at the Beverly Hills Farmers’ Market, the Transportation Bureau will host a Used Bicycle Collection for residents to donate old bikes and parts to non-profit organization, Walk ‘n Rollers, who will fix them up and distribute the refurbished bicycles to children and adults without the resources to purchase bikes on their own. Please consider donating to help less fortunate members of the community have access to transportation.
Walk ‘n Rollers will also offer free safety inspections and minor bicycle repairs for residents that ride to the event. For a full list of Public Works Day events, visit:
https://www.beverlyhills.org/departments/publicworks/publicworksdaymay192024.
COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT
To get the word out to residents about these events, the City will be mailing a citywide postcard (Attachment 1), publishing newspaper ads in three newspapers, posting on social media, sending an e-blast to the Complete Streets/Mobility stakeholder email list, presenting the events calendar to the Traffic and Parking Commission, and distributing flyers at City facilities and events. Additionally, the City has reached out to the Beverly Hills Unified School District to offer City support for Bike and Walk to School Day events.
FISCAL IMPACT
Funds to produce and promote National Bike Month events are in the approved Public Works Department operating budget for Fiscal Year 2023-24.
