Dear Mayor Friedman and members of the city council:
I want to welcome newly-elected councilmembers Corman and Wells to the council dais. Thank you very much for stepping up to serve our city. I look forward to your next four years on city council.
With respect to one specific proposed amendment to the legislative platform I want to object.
I do not agree that our city should unequivocally support the state of Israel or include such an amendment in the legislative platform.
It is one thing to support the people of Israel, which I do. But I am not comfortable with city support for the corrupt coalition government now in place. And I particularly don’t support the inclusion of formal, unequivocal support in the legislative platform at this time when there is an ongoing and apparent genocide in Gaza perpetrated by the state of Israel.
I do not believe that the council should speak on behalf of the electorate on this divisive and moral issue. And in any case I don’t believe that an unequivocal statement of support belongs in the legislative platform at all.
Thank you,
Mark Elliot
