2. Proposed Sign Locations
INTRODUCTION
This item provides City Council an opportunity to discuss and provide direction on the design of the temporary signs for the October 7th memorial honoring the victims of the October 7, 2023, attack on Israel.
DISCUSSION
On August 20, 2024, City Council approved an appropriation for the temporary flag installation to honor the victims of the October 7, 2023, attack on Israel and hostages who have been murdered. In addition, City Council provided input on the design of temporary memorial street signage to temporarily identify the block of Beverly Gardens Park located between North Santa Monica Boulevard and Park Way and between Crescent Drive and Cañon Drive as, “October 7th Memorial Square.”
Originally, the memorial signs were proposed to be attached below the official street name signs. Several Councilmembers expressed a desire to have the signs use black lettering on a white background. Based on this input, and to provide clear signage of the memorial while also avoiding potential confusion with the street names, the proposed sign designs (Attachment 1) differ slightly in appearance to the City’s standard street name signs. Staff is also proposing to install the temporary signs on decorative poles in the parkway area near the four corners of the block as illustrated in Attachment 2, rather than installing them below the street name signs.
FISCAL IMPACT
The cost of fabricating and installing the signs is estimated to be $900. This was included in the overall funding request approved by City Council on August 20, 2024.
