INTRODUCTION
On October 17, 2024, the community is encouraged to join the City of Beverly Hills, the State of California, County and City of Los Angeles, and many other stakeholders, in participating in the Great California Shakeout. Community members are encouraged to practice earthquake safety behaviors such as practicing reacting as if an earthquake has occurred: (DROP, COVER and HOLD), checking emergency supplies and updating personal emergency plans.
Additionally, the City will conduct its first full-scale, citywide audible test of the Outdoor Warning Siren (OWS) System. On October 17th, 2024, at 10:30AM, the City will sound all 12 sirens that have been placed strategically around the city to ensure maximum sound coverage.
DISCUSSION
We all must become better prepared for major earthquakes by practicing how to protect ourselves when they occur. Compared to the rest of the country, California is at high risk of experiencing a major earthquake. As with anything, practicing allows for a quick reaction. In an earthquake, we may only have seconds to protect ourselves before strong shaking occurs potentially causing personal or bodily injury or structural damage. The idea is, if we practice now, then when an earthquake actually occurs, we will automatically drop to the ground, take cover, and hold on. The City encourages residents and businesses to participate. Information on how to participate can be found at www.shakeout.org.
The City has provided information on the Great California ShakeOut through the following sources:
• Public announcements on the City’s cable channels 10 and 35; • Public announcements on the City’s radio channel AM 1500; • Information on the City’s website, Facebook and Twitter pages; Meeting Date: October 10, 2024
• Email blast to DCS, past CERT participants, and other City-associated community groups;
• Variety of targeted outreach to business, medical centers/ surgery centers/ urgent cares, community-based organizations, faith-based organizations; • And other miscellaneous outreach.
Continuing the mission of preparedness, the City will conduct its first citywide audible test of the Outdoor Warning System. On October 17th, 2024, at 10:30AM, the city will sound all 12 sirens that have been placed strategically around the city to ensure maximum sound coverage.
Goals for the audible test are as follows:
• Verify Siren Functionality;
• Identify and Address Issues;
• Validate Activation Procedures;
• Assess Coverage and Audibility;
• Familiarize The Public To The Sound.
The City has provided information on the OWS System audible test through the following sources:
• Public announcements on the City’s cable channels 10 and 35; • Public announcements on the City’s radio channel AM 1500; • Press Release detailing OWS purpose and instructions; • Information on the City’s website, Facebook, and Twitter pages; • eNotice sent to all enrolled;
• Mayor Social Media video;
• Everbridge phone call from the Mayor;
