From: Magdalena Davis Jones, Community Outreach Manager Subject: RENEWAL OF THE USE OF THE BEVERLY HILLS SHIELD, WITH
MODIFICATIONS, BY WOLFGANG PUCK FOR MARKETING THE
BEVERLY HILLS AUTUMN BBQ 2026 EVENT, AND APPROVAL OF
THE WAIVER OF THE ASSOCIATED LICENSING FEE
Attachments: 1. Autumn BBQ 2026 Event with City Shield Design
2. City Council Agenda Report from August 19, 2025
RECOMMENDATION
Staff recommend that the City approve a renewal of the use of the Beverly Hills Shield, with modifications, by Wolfgang Puck in partnership with the Maybourne Hotel, for marketing the Beverly Hills Autumn BBQ event, and approve the waiver of the associated licensing fee. City Council previously approved this use in 2025.
INTRODUCTION
The City periodically receives inquiries about the use of the trademarked Beverly Hills City Shield. Last year, in 2025, City Council approved a proposal (Attachment 2) from Wolfgang Puck for the use of the City Shield to market their first Autumn BBQ fundraising event, benefitting nonprofit No Kid Hungry. Council approved a one-year agreement for use of the design with modifications. Additionally, they approved the waiver of the licensing fee for the use of the City Shield and requested that the City of Beverly Hills be listed as a sponsor in the event’s marketing materials.
This item seeks City Council approval for a renewal for the use of the Beverly Hills Shield for marketing the second annual Beverly Hills Autumn BBQ 2026 event. The private, ticketed event is expected to draw approximately 300 guests and will feature Wolfgang Puck along with chefs with local restaurants such as Dominique Crenn, and other celebrated chefs Damon Gordon, and Nancy Silverton. All proceeds from the event will benefit No Kid Hungry, a national nonprofit focused on ending childhood hunger. The renewal includes the same terms as the previous year’s agreement, and a waiver of the standard license fee of five thousand dollars ($5,000.00). The event will pay all other permit fees and rental fee of Beverly Caňon Gardens, adjacent to the Maybourne Hotel.
Meeting Date: September 1, 2026
DISCUSSION
Staff receives inquiries from individuals and businesses looking to use the Beverly Hills Shield or its likeness on products and merchandise. Last year, City Council reviewed in detail and approved a use agreement and waiver of fees for a modification to the shield.
Similarly the request this year was referred to the Committee by the City’s branding and licensing consultant CMG Worldwide (CMG), who has worked with the City since 2013.
Wolfgang Puck is a renowned local chef and restaurateur whose flagship restaurant, Spago Beverly Hills, has become an iconic culinary destination since opening on Canon Drive in 1997. Originally launched in 1982 on the Sunset Strip, Spago helped define California cuisine with its fresh, innovative approach and celebrity clientele. The Beverly Hills location continues to showcase seasonal menus crafted with locally sourced ingredients, earning critical acclaim and accolades including two Michelin stars. Spago remains a cornerstone of the City's fine dining scene and Chef Wolfgang an integral part of culinary events that fundraise for nonprofits relating to food insecurity.
Building on this legacy of culinary excellence, the team at Wolfgang Puck is organizing a second-annual elevated fundraiser titled Beverly Hills Autumn BBQ, scheduled to take place on October 18, 2026, at Beverly Canon Gardens. This exclusive event will feature Wolfgang Puck alongside other acclaimed chefs, and is expected to draw 250+ guests.
The event will benefit No Kid Hungry, a national campaign dedicated to ending childhood hunger in America. All proceeds from the silent auction, led by the No Kid Hungry team, as well as the event’s net revenue, will be donated directly to support their mission. Guests will have the opportunity to bid on exclusive items and experiences, with 100 percent of auction proceeds helping ensure every child has access to the nutritious food they need to thrive. Last year’s event raised $42,000 for the nonprofit.
The event will be co-presented by Spago Beverly Hills and the Maybourne Hotel, with tickets priced between $300-550 per guest. It will not operate as a for-profit endeavor, and all proceeds will be directed to the beneficiary. As part of their branding and promotional materials, the event organizers have proposed incorporating the City of Beverly Hills shield alongside the event title “Autumn BBQ”. The shield will also be used on hats, aprons, and signage at the event. While the City very rarely approves alterations to its trademarked shield design, the CMG team believes once again the proposed design remains faithful to the shield’s integrity and visual identity.
The only item different from the renewal terms would be a request to sell merchandise, up to 300 hats in 3 colors, with the modified shield logo on it. The design and colors have been reviewed by staff, and the design is in line with the shield integrity and City branding standards. The baseball-style hats will retail for $35, and with a cost of $11.15, will net $23.85 per unit, to be donated to No Kid Hungry. For charitable donation purposes, a revenue split with the City is not proposed.
Given the charitable nature of the event, the organizers are requesting a waiver of the licensing fee traditionally associated with use of the City shield. All other permit fees and policies relating to the permit will be strictly enforced. Additional details of the event, and the terms of last year’s agreement, including the City’s listing as a sponsor of the event, can be found in Attachments 1.
Meeting Date: September 1, 2026
FISCAL IMPACT
The City Council is requested to renew the previous terms for shield use for the Autumn BBQ, waive the estimated $5,000 licensing fee of the proposed item, and agree to a new merchandise element for sales, without a revenue split since the proceeds will be donated to a nonprofit. An agreement will be executed, under the authority of the City Manager. All other permit fees will be charged.

The Liaisons approved the design with modifications.
Additionally, they approved the waiver of the licensing fee for the use of the City Shield and requested that the City of Beverly Hills be listed as a sponsor in the event’s marketing materials.
This item seeks City Council approval of the recommendation from the Beverly Hills City Council Liaison Branding and Licensing Committee to approve the use of the Beverly Hills Shield by Wolfgang Puck for marketing the Beverly Hills Autumn BBQ fundraising event. DISCUSSION
Staff receives inquiries from individuals and businesses looking to use the Beverly Hills Shield or its likeness on products and merchandise. As requests are received, they are reviewed by the Beverly Hills City Council Liaison Branding and Licensing Committee (Committee). The Committee met on August 6, 2025, to discuss the use of the Beverly Hills Shield by Wolfgang Puck and provided direction. The request was referred to the Committee by the City’s branding and licensing consultant CMG Worldwide (CMG). The City has contracted with CMG since 2013.

As part of their branding and promotional materials, the event organizers have proposed incorporating the City of Beverly Hills shield alongside the event title "Autumn Barbecue."
