How long have you lived in Brisbane? 9 years
Occupation: Engagement Manager
Employer's Name: Slack Technologies
Present Position: Engagement Manager Length of Employment: 4 months Why do you want to be a member of the Open Space and Ecology Committee? One of the many reasons I live in the Bay area is the exceptional diversity of flora and fauna that exist in this bioregion. I spend a great deal of my outdoor time in the San Bruno Mountains running and I am an active gardener seeking to bring pollinators and beneficial species to our precious community on the hillside. I would like to play an active role in preserving, and enhancing, what makes this place uniquely Brisbane.

Please list any background information (business, education, personal) that might be useful, especially concerning activities that demonstrate your record of public service and commitment to the community.
● Co-founder of the Parental advisory support organization at work (Slalom Parents @ Slalom Consulting LLC). The organization gained traction in my San Francisco office of ~350 employees and we seeded chapters in other offices. We facilitated activism such as advocating for paternity leave, which was rolled out globally in 2018 ● My kindergartener attends Brisbane Elementary and I actively participate in classroom support ● I am active in the Mothers of Brisbane (MOB)

● I helmed the planning of the 2019 Sierra Point Block party, which included >250 Brisbane residents, 6 hours of local music, and community potluck. Proceeds from the block party benefit Brisbane schools.

OPEN SPACE AND ECOLOGY COMMITTEE

APPLICATION
TO: HONORABLE MAYOR AND CITY COUNCIL
I am a resident of the City of Brisbane and am interested in being considered for appointment on the Open Space and Ecology Committee.

Name: Rebecca Mitchell, MD
Address: Brisbane CA 94005
Home Phone: NA Work Phone: NA
Cell Phone: Email Address:

How long have you lived in Brisbane? 3.5 years
Occupation: health technology product development, affordable housing investor/developer
Employer's Name: Teladoc Health
Present Position: VP, Clinical Products Length of Employment: 4 years Why do you want to be a member of the Open Space and Ecology Committee? The open spaces within and surrounding Brisbane, and the broader Bay Area, are a huge part of why we moved here and where we spend our recreational time as a family of 7. We are so lucky to live in a place with this natural wealth. Preserving and where needed restoring these places is a priority for our family.

Please list any background information (business, education, personal) that might be useful, especially concerning activities that demonstrate your record of public service and commitment to the community.

Relevant Degrees:
 Graduated with Honors from the University of MN-Twin Cities with a major in Biology, Society and the Environment.
15 A.
 Medical Doctorate with Honors from the University of CA – San Francisco. While medical science is of course not ecology, it deepened my knowledge base further in the basic sciences and scientific method. I am very comfortable reading and synthesizing published scientific studies, interpreting complex data sets, and translating complex scientific topics to large audiences to inform a decision or educate.

Relevant public service/community experience:
 Founded and ran an international non profit for 6 years during college and medical school that helped fund and train young entrepreneurs across Africa with community-oriented economic and public health development ideas
 2 years as Medical Officer for Innovation at Health and Human Services, Washington DC.  2 years employed at the non profit Code for America partnering with local counties and cities/towns to improve community health with technology  Current Partner and largest Investor in a fund that improves the quality and quantity of housing for community members with medical and/or economic hardships. We have purchased and renovated over 40 derelict homes in our first 2 years, and through partnerships with local hospital systems and non profits rent these homes to over 100 community members previously facing housing instability or very poor quality housing.

Misc Relevant Experience:
 I have a significant knowledge base in biology, regenerative agriculture, permaculture, and local food systems. My special interest is how we can create beautiful vibrant communities and local food production while rebuilding ecosystems for local flora and fauna. Our property at 131 Sierra Point is being transformed with these principles into our own little food producing, soil and pollinator enriching, slice of paradise! I am currently pursuing more formal training and certification to support other families and communities who want to make a similar transition.

What do you feel you could contribute to the Open Space and Ecology Committee? Please provide information that demonstrates your interest in open space and ecological issues.

With my background in medicine and healthcare, I’m keenly aware that it is our day to day decisions and behaviors that determine a great deal of physical health. My entire career has focused on how to use policy, technology, and human connection to help people start and keep healthier behaviors.

The same is true of the health of our ecosystems - how our community treats storm runoff, our attitude towards marshes, or the intensity of lights we use in the evening are some of the many small decisions that determine the greater whole. I would be honored to bring that experience to advise on how we might preserve and improve our ecological health as a community.

CITY OF BRISBANE

PARKS AND RECREATION COMMISSION

APPLICATION
TO: HONORABLE MAYOR AND CITY COUNCIL
I am a resident of the City of Brisbane and am interested in being considered for appointment on the Parks & Recreation Commission.

Name: Sarah Duffy
Address: Brisbane CA

Cell Phone: Email Address:

How long have you lived in Brisbane? 8-1/2 years
Occupation: Local government manager
Employer's Name: Community Services Department, City of Palo Alto Present Position: Senior Manager of Strategy and Operations What community activities are you presently involved in, or have been in the past? As a parent with two children in the Brisbane School District (at Brisbane Elementary School) participate in many community activities and lessons. My children have enjoyed tennis, swimming lessons, soccer and t-ball. They have learned to swim at the Brisbane Pool. I enjoy the pool and hike the trails around town on a daily basis. I have brought two generations of dogs to the dog park. We have held many birthday parties at the community park. Every member of our family has greatly benefitted from Brisbane Parks and Recreation!
My family and I always enjoy festivities like the Day in the Park and Festival of Lights. As a member of the Mothers of Brisbane, I have supported the MOB in parks events.

But perhaps most importantly, both of my children attend the Parks and Recreation Summer and afterschool programs at BES, and my family has relied on them for afterschool care when we are at work. My children love the staff and friendships they have made in afterschool and summer camp.

Please list any other background information (business, education, personal) that might be useful.
33 B.

I have around 15 years of experience working in youth family and community services. In my current job I provide strategic direction and support for the City of Palo Alto's recreation, arts, and sciences and parks. The Community Services Department provides human services for vulnerable populations (children, families, seniors, persons without housing); classes and camps; leadership programming, special events, community facilities, museum and zoo, Art Center, community centers, and three community theaters. The Department where I work oversees thousands of acres of open space; 40 miles of hiking trails; an aquatics center, and a municipal golf course. I also supervise the development, analysis, and monitoring of the department’s $30 million+ annual operations budget, fiscal and contract support for capital budget projects, and human resources. I’m responsible for ensuring billing, budget targets and Departmental performance measures are tracked and updated.

In my prior role I worked for the San Francisco Dept of Children Youth & Their Families for over a decade. My work involved child, youth and families programing. Specifically, I led program evaluations of afterschool and summer and enrichment programs operated at school and community locations in San Francisco. I also worked with the San Francisco Parks and Recreation Department (SF RPD) on many childcare programs funded by both the SF RPD and Department where I work.

I have a lot of experience working on community engagement campaigns, including resident and parent surveys in multiple languages, to help assess needs and service preferences, and then have led dedicated efforts to implement improvements based on community input.

I have a master’s degree in public policy with a focus on youth policy, public budgets, program administration and evaluation.

Why do you want to be a member of the above Commission/Board? Ensuring that government-funded services meet community needs is one of my professional and personal passions. As an active user of Parks and Recreation facilities and offerings, and most importantly as a parent of two children who have been very actively engaged in the Recreation and Parks programming in Brisbane, I would like to lend my expertise and experience in municipal recreation and youth programming to help guide the City’s decisions about parks and recreation. I love living in Brisbane and am proud of our resources – both natural and people- and I would like to work to preserve the existing Recreation and Parks programs and improve quality and better meet community needs, especially as we hopefully shift back into more in person services later in 2021. One priority as a Commissioner would be to work collaboratively with the Brisbane School District to expand access to the pre-school, afterschool and summer programs with the aim of providing all families who need childcare access to the programs as well as adding new enrichment and academic opportunities at these programs based on the demand of families.

What do you feel you could contribute to the Commission/Board? My number one contribution would be bringing parent perspective to the Commission, and engaging with other parents who have feedback about programming and parks for kids in Brisbane that are operated by the Parks and Recreation Dept. With two children at BEW who engage in a variety of programs I have first hand experiences and input to share. 34 B.

I would also bring professional municipal experience in youth and family programming- both childcare and recreation. I have over a decade of experience in program evaluation, policy and legislative review, and budget and finance analysis. I am very familiar with the Bay Area and more specifically San Mateo, it’s parks and recreation offerings. I also have worked on several projects related to collaboration between City Departments and School Districts and non-profit organizations that are relevant to programs that take place on school campuses in Brisbane. I have also worked on many community engagement campaigns, including resident and parent surveys in multiple languages, to help assess needs and service preferences, and then have worked to implement improvements based on community input. As I mentioned above, ensuring that government-funded services meet community needs is one of my professional and personal passions. Finally, I have staffed advisory boards and committees and have presented at commission hearings in my current and previous jobs, so am familiar with meeting procedures.

Parks and Recreation Commission meetings are held on the 2nd Wednesday of each month, beginning at 6:30 p.m. Commissioners also attend weekend activities such as Day in the Park, and Lagoon and Canyon Clean-ups. What other commitments might cause conflicts in your attendance at Commission meetings/activities or conferences?
I do not anticipate any conflicts with attending meetings or activities.

How long have you lived in Brisbane? 8 years
Occupation: Compliance, Pharmaceuticals
Employer's Name: Urovant Sciences, Inc
Present Position: Director of Compliance Length of Employment: 3 months What community activities are you presently involved in, or have been in the past? Currently, serving as the Brisbane Park and Recreation Chair Commissioner, serving since 2018.

Also, I’m part of a couple of the Brisbane P&R subcommittees, Day in the Park/Derby, Concerts in the Park, Recreation Facilities, Youth Programs, Seniors, etc. I have also participated in the Park and Rec events that include Concerts in the Park, Corn Hole Tournaments, Pumpkin Water Patch, etc.

Please list any other background information (business, education, personal) that might be useful.

It took me 3 years to graduate from High School as I took went to a Community College during these years so I can start my college life at 16. At 16, I applied for colleges and decided to attend SJSU to major in Biology. I decided on Biology because I wanted a career that focused on helping the community. 3 yrs into College, I had my daughter, Elyssa, and raised her as a single mom. With the support of my family, I was able to work and obtain my degree in Biology, along with finding a role at a pharmaceutical 36 B.
company right out of college. I was working as Research Associate and decided my path should be focused in the Commercial part of pharmaceuticals. This is where I found the outcomes of the research and the launch of a new drug, how it impacted patients, healthcare providers, etc. This lead my path in going back to school for my MBA and I completed this in 2 yrs. Post grad, I moved up from being in Research to Marketing and now part of the Compliance team at Urovant Sciences, Irvine, CA, working remote.

In between on working on my career path, I fell in love with my husband who was a single father (Jewel) and we became the “modern family,” parenting 2 daughters together. In 2009, we had a daughter together, who’s now 12, named Nolan, when we lived in a small town called Albany, CA. We decided to move back in the Peninsula since our 3 daughters attended schools in SF and found a home in Brisbane in 2014. In 2016 while remodeling, building an addition, we had another addition to our family… Harper, who is now 5 yrs old.

We’ve been well-involved with the schools, coaching volleyball and basketball, volunteering at Glide Memorial and the SF and Marin Food Banks. Our family also utilizes the Brisbane Park and Rec, and I decided to look into being involved with our community here in Brisbane. That’s when I decided to apply as the Park and Rec Commissioner back in 2018. In thinking more, I didn’t think to re-apply as I recently started a role at Urovant couple months ago, but decided to proceed with the process, knowing Brisbane individuals to keep our Park and Recreation strong and active.

Why do you want to be a member of the above Commission/Board? I enjoy working with the Park and Recreation Staff and learned about the processes, community, and also with the Pandemic that the community has been flexible. We all have a goal to make our community strong. I also enjoy the outdoors of Brisbane and want to pay it forward by re-applying as part of the Park and Commission.

What do you feel you could contribute to the Commission/Board? I feel I can contribute by being a great listener to hearing the needs of the community.

I also enjoy Brisbane’s activities and can continue to support our Park and Recreation events. Also, I feel if there is a need in a specific area for the Park and Recreation, I can be there to assist with what is needed.

37 B.

I don’t have any conflicts right now, but understand the time commitments.

I recently moved to Brisbane and have not had the chance to be actively involved with the community, but I am actively seeking out opportunities to give back to the City of Brisbane and its residents.

Please list any other background information (business, education, personal) that might be useful.

I have a legal background and am well verse in reading and understanding statutory requirements (e.g., the Brisbane Municipal Code) and applying them to real-life situations. In addition, I have always had an interest in giving back to my community. Prior to moving to California, I was actively involved in my local Community Board in New York City.

Why do you want to be a member of the above Commission/Board? I visit the Brisbane Dog Park every day (and sometimes twice a day) and have had the pleasure of meeting a lot of my neighbors despite being in Brisbane for such a short time. Every person 41 B.
that I have met so far has been extremely happy with what Parks and Recreation has done in the last few months (for example, the dog park renovation), and I want to be able to contribute to their continued happiness. I truly believe that the Parks and Recreation Commission has made a huge impact on the lives of the residents of Brisbane.

What do you feel you could contribute to the Commission/Board? As an attorney, I have a lot of experience in acting in an advisory capacity. This is compounded by the fact that I spend a lot of time at the Brisbane Dog Park and the Brisbane Community Park, and in an excellent position to truly understand the needs and perceptions of Brisbane's residents regarding the city's recreational opportunities and amenities. My legal background also makes me the perfect candidate to handle any administrative or policy related tasks as required by the Parks and Recreation Commission and/or the City Council.

I have no commitments that would cause a conflict with the Parks and Recreation Commission meetings every month. I work from home and have flexible working hours and can always make myself available to the needs of the Parks and Recreation Commission.

I am also never required to work on weekends so I will attend all the special events held by Parks and Recreation. I also plan all of my vacation months in advance to ensure that it does not conflict with any prior obligations (either at work or personally).

Occupation: Attorney
Employer's Name: Sharma, Smith & Gray, P.C.

Present Position: Counsel Length of Employment: 2 years Why do you want to be a member of the IDEA Committee?
It has been apparent over the last few years that diversity and inclusion has been a big-ticket item for discussion in the local communities of California (and nationwide). I am highly impressed with the establishment of the IDEA Committee because it shows commitment and dedication on the part of City of Brisbane City Council for truly wanting to improve the lives of the people who live and work here.

Please list any background information (business, education, personal) that might be useful, especially concerning activities that demonstrate your record of public service and commitment to the community.

I am an attorney with over five years of experience. During law school, I worked at two federal agencies (the Office of the United States Attorneys and the Administrative Office of the U.S.

Courts) and have always wanted to give back to the public sector and my community. I was also an active member of the Asian Pacific American Law Student Association while I was in law school, where I dedicated my time to serving the Asian and Pacific Islander community. I was also a member of my law school's Black Law Students Association (which was open to all 44 C.
minorities in the legal profession) where I coordinated fundraisers and events that gave back to the community.

What do you feel you could contribute to the IDEA Committee? Please provide information that demonstrates your interest in inclusion, diversity, and equity issues.

As an Asian American who has seen the amount of hatred towards the Asian community in California, I feel that I have an obligation to do anything I can to rectify these issues and to make the voices of everyone heard. Working towards inclusion, diversity and equity has always been a goal of mine (as evidenced by my active participation in APALSA and BLSA while I was in law school) and I have always rallied up against Asian hate. I want to be able to further my contributions to these social issues by being part of the IDEA Committee.

Growing up, one thing that I have noticed is that Asians tend to not have an active voice in their own communities. I think a lot of this stems from the unwillingness of Asians (and certain other minority groups) to the focus of public attention for fear of retribution or hate crimes. We saw this happen all throughout the COVID-19 pandemic and I want the Asian community in the City of Brisbane to be more proactive in bettering the community they live and work in, as well as the lives of everyone else.

What diverse perspective will you bring to this committee? I am a first-generation Asian American. Both of my parents came to the United States from China in the 1980s in hopes of a better life for themselves and their future family. Since then, they have accomplished that from an economic perspective but not from an inclusion perspective. To this day, they still refuse to live in communities that is not predominately Chinese in fear of being victims of hate crimes. I truly believe that everyone of all nationalities and ethnicities can live peacefully with one another, and I want to be part of this Committee so that I can be a changing force for everyone who lives and works in the City of Brisbane.

Hello and thank you for taking the time to read my application. I would like to be considered as a candidate for the IDEA Committee because my life passion has always been to provide support to underrepresented, underserved and marginalized communities. I feel fortunate to be bilingual and bicultural. I have spent my life striving to empower others to embrace their diversity and use it as a tool for empowerment. I am interested in being a part of a greater shift and vision for our community. I am invigorated at the idea of strategizing with other like minded community members in Brisbane. Community building is something I am passionate about and I am confident that being a part of the IDEA Committee will allow me to learn so much more about Brisbane. When I was growing up, my mother was always involved in our community/ school sector, so today, I wish to do the same to show my children how important community advocacy is.

Please list any background information (business, education, personal) that might be useful, especially concerning activities that demonstrate your record of public service and commitment to the community.

My background for 10 years has been deeply rooted in supporting Survivors as they navigate domestic violence. I have had the privilege of working with families in San Francisco and was trained to be a liaison between the government sector and families. I have been able to provide advocacy for families crisis/transition/ working towards reunification within the government sector of Child Protective Services in S.F.

I find strength and knowledge in working with families. I speak Spanish which enables me to provide support to a broader sector as well.

When my daughters were born I decided to shift my energy from government/nonprofit work to working closely with the co-op school, Silverspot.

With my extensive background in nonprofit fundraising, I was asked to be on the Board of Directors at Silverspot as their “fundraising” team. Working with the Board allowed me to meet many wonderful families in town as well as admirable community members.

My second year, the school voted me as the Vice President of the Board which was an honor. I worked very hard to build a bridge between Silverspot and the city of Brisbane. I saw a deep need to have the city feel connected with the co-op, as many still do not understand the co-op/ have fear in applying/ questions with financial aid etc. I was able to educate the family on what options they had and reminded them all children are deserving of education. The end result was a wonderful local family that was able to access financial assistance.

When my daughter graduated from the co-op, she began her journey at BES. I had such a wonderful experience with Brisbane while I was with Silverspot I decided to apply to be the room parent at BES for kindergarten, 1st grade and currently 2nd grade.

I have a strong ongoing desire to work with my community and be a liaison between families and the community sector. I love talking with people and getting to know them each on an authentic level.

What do you feel you could contribute to the IDEA Committee? Please provide information that demonstrates your interest in inclusion, diversity, and equity issues.

I feel my contribution to the IDEA Committee will be to be a voice and advocate to those who have yet to feel heard. I know personally when I moved to Bribane, it felt intimidating to ask questions that could be interpreted as “weak.” It can be very challenging for folks to be vulnerable/ speak on topics such as a lack of inclusion and diversity. I am interested in the IDEA committee because I think it can be a way to start an authentic conversation about the daily disparities we all see/experience. I live my life in a way that I strive to create a safe space for the community to speak on equity issues and what diversity truly means in Brisbane. I know how it is to speak on these topics when you feel you're the only person in the community experiencing the inequities. There is power in community conversations and I hope the IDEA Committee can empower folks to voice their thoughts without fear of judgement.

What diverse perspective will you bring to this committee? I find joy in connecting community members to resources and providing people with a safe space to talk about issues that can be challenging. When people in our community feel safe to speak, diverse perspectives will come out.

I think Brisbane deserves to have a community liaison that can bridge the gap between community members and community leaders. I identify as a woman of color and have spent my entire career working towards strengthening relationships between the city and community, with a lens of diversity/inclusion/empowerment.

I have personally worked with families in Brisbane that, for example, did not want to access financial services at the co-op because they felt uncomfortable asking for help. I spoke to the family, honored their thoughts and later talked about the options they would have. The end result was a local family accessing financial services they might not have accessed but qualified for/deserved.

I think the reason people have felt safe to talk to me about private issues is because I always express to everyone that I know what it feels like to have shame. I know what it feels like to be scared to ask for help. I have been very open with my peers in Brisbane about how intimidating/uncomfortable it is to walk into a room and notice I am the only woman of color. I know how hard it is to have conversations about socioeconomics, inclusion and what diversity means when you fear everyone will criticize you.
50 C.

I honor how much shame people can feel when they need to ask for help in Brisbane because I personally have felt this shame. I know the uncomfortability that people feel when they ask a question and do not feel heard/ feel judged.

My goal as a community member is to empower folks to feel safe to ask questions, ask for help and know there is someone wanting to be an ally.

If selected, my mission would be to work with the people of Bribane to build bridges so that the underrepresented/marginalized know their voice is a vital part of the fabric for the future of our city.

Through my work at the Genentech Foundation, I have been involved in anti-racist work – including understanding how as a white woman white supremacy has benefitted me – since about 2018, and it has been gratifying to go to work with the aim of dismantling that system and redistributing power and resources to historically excluded communities. Following the death of George Floyd, my extended family also began having weekly calls examining our privilege and questioning our complicity with white supremacy. Suffice it to say, diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice are guiding principles in my life.

My husband and I, along with our 18 month old daughter, moved to Brisbane in August, 2021. We were originally looking at houses in San Francisco but after our first drive through Brisbane, we knew that what had been missing in all those houses we looked at was the sense of community we immediately felt driving past the park and downtown. Since we moved, I’ve been looking for ways to become more involved in the community and when I saw the announcement to apply for the IDEA Committee, it felt like a perfect opportunity. I want to work to support a community that not only welcomes everyone, but actively endeavors to identify and undo policies and practices that perpetuate inequities and creates opportunities to build an equitable community. 52 C.

Please list any background information (business, education, personal) that might be useful, especially concerning activities that demonstrate your record of public service and commitment to the community.

I was raised with a deep commitment to service. Growing up, I participated in Girl Scouts (through my Silver Award) as well as many volunteering activities. After completing my undergraduate degree, I spent a year volunteering at the Unitarian Universalist United Nations Office and every job I have had since then has been focused on improving the lives of others, from fundraising for Oxfam, to an education reform nonprofit in San Francisco as well as a nonprofit supporting homeless youth in SF to my current role with the Genentech Foundation. I have committed my career to supporting my community and have been seeking a way to do this outside of work as well. The IDEA Committee provides just that opportunity.

What do you feel you could contribute to the IDEA Committee? Please provide information that demonstrates your interest in inclusion, diversity, and equity issues.

I studied abroad with indigenous communities in the Navajo Nation, India, New Zealand, and Mexico as a junior in college. While in India, we stayed with a community that was largely cut off, but the World Bank was building a hospital near them and this meant creating the first paved road to their community. The World Bank had decided the project wasn’t viable and had stopped construction with a skeleton building. We had a community meeting and the villagers looked at us and said, “you have to do something” and we said, “but we’re college kids, what can we do?” and they said, “you’re white, just like them.” At that moment, I realized the privilege my skin tone carried and the responsibility I had to use it to dismantle the systems that perpetuated those inequities. I completed my master’s degree at the London School of Economics in Philosophy and Public Policy and wrote my thesis about the systemic inequities perpetuated by American drug policy. Following my masters, I moved to San Francisco and have worked at two nonprofits, one focused on education reform in San Francisco and one supporting homeless youth in SF, and now at the Genentech Foundation, whose mission is to challenge and dismantle systemic barriers to create sustainable careers in science and medicine.

Through my work with the Genentech Foundation, I have had the opportunity to participate in several DE&I focused trainings and have led the Foundation’s efforts to employ an equity lens in our operations and grant making. Based on the progress I have led, in 2020 I participated in a panel discussion hosted by Northern California Grantmakers for their “Foundations of Racial Equity” series.

I bring an anti-racist lens to my professional and personal life every day and would bring the competency I have built in this space to the committee, as well as a deep desire to support my community in building its own diversity, equity, and inclusion muscles.

What diverse perspective will you bring to this committee? I believe that having moved here relatively recently, I will bring a diverse perspective to the committee. My family moved here because even from our first time here, the depth and richness of the community was evident. That said, fresh eyes can sometimes see things that those that have been here for a while no longer recognize. I don’t mean to say that I would try to upend the committee, or 53 C.

Brisbane is a vibrant, thriving, dynamic community that I’ve viewed to be very well-administered as well as governed. As the city attracts new residents, as well as new businesses from other parts of the Bay Area and indeed, from around the world, its diversity continues to grow. As someone who has prior experience in local governance in various forms, coupled with my own personal background as a first generation immigrant to the US and to the Bay Area, I hope to enrich the discourse and to contribute useful ideas that further the inclusion, diversity, equity and accountability objectives of this newly created IDEA Committee.

With a small child, who is presently 2.5 years old, and who has quickly approached a different life stage in her development. It now presently allows me the space to dedicate myself and explore opportunities to contribute to the Brisbane community that I call “home”. Prior community involvement includes participation with activities centered mainly around my child’s learning and play. My daughter and I have taken swim lessons at the public pool, and we have read and participated at group read along and singing at the public library with other parents and children in her age groups.

We have made neighborhood friends at the community park and welcomed visitors from our surrounding communities visiting our park resources.

Although these are community activities in which my role was a more of a participant or audience member, I welcome a more active role to plan and execute these activities for our community in the future.

Before I became a full-time caregiver for my child, I was a managing director for a public agency that served the City of San Francisco performing work in the medicolegal community. My role and responsibilities required me to manage employees and have direct oversite of day-to-day operations, oversee budgetary and resource management.

I have always been drawn to engage, help and assist others within my own neighborhood, and my former “work community”. Working for the City of San Francisco, it is rare for employees of varying departments to interact with others outside the scope of their own agency. I, on the other hand, seek out the opportunities to assist and engage with other departmental agencies whenever possible.

An example that best articulates this level of commitment (bringing a smile to my face and warm thoughts when fondly recalling the day’s activities) included officiating dozens of marriage ceremonies on Valentine’s Day for the San Francisco County Clerk’s Office.

Each year on Valentine’s Day the San Francisco County Clerk marries thousands of couples within the steps of City Hall with their families and loved ones looking on. The County Clerk sought assistance from outside department heads to ensure the thousands of couples’ wedding vows were exchanged efficiently, effectively and were intimately honored on this special day, and I gladly offered my assistance as a Marriage Commissioner. I was trained for some weeks before the February holiday and was deputized as a County Clerk Marriage Commission for the intended purpose. To bear witness to couples of all aspects of life including the LGBTQ+ and straight communities, and to be part of the celebrated day of love and inclusion was one of the most intimate and most moving experiences I have had the opportunity to participate.

What do you feel you could contribute to the IDEA Committee? Please provide information that demonstrates your interest in inclusion, diversity, and equity issues.

As a full-time caregiver and father, I have had the opportunity to engage with several parents and grandparents, nannies, caregivers, and strangers who have asked when in public spaces with my daughter if I was a stay-at-home father. I proudly confirm my role as a male caregiver and have fostered an open and safe space for dialogue to answer perfect stranger’s enquiring questions. I have heard varying stories and thoughts expressing predefined gender roles within their own families and circles of friends. I wish to share with the committee this willingness to listen and learn from others, and share my own experience with them to foster dialogue within the community group.

Through my own experiences, I have grown empathy and compassionate consideration toward my community when considering all stakeholders before taking action. The outcome is generally overwhelmingly positive when the planning and decision-making process focuses on (1) community inclusive dialogue, and (2) the implementation process is conscientious collective action taken.

By engaging in thoughtful listening and sensitive communicative engagement with community members is the only means to understand the group’s collective needs. And it’s through this dialogue which allows us to ensure we have not omitted minority stakeholders who may have been overlooked during the process. Finally, it is through this process that presents the ability of devising a plan as a group to navigate the course of action collectively.

What diverse perspective will you bring to this committee? Engage in difficult new activities that may scare and challenge you.

This phrase is somewhat of my own personal approach to life, because it is through these rare moments in which I have learned most about myself and have further developed my own unique perspective. Through my own personal struggle engaging in new experiences and sometimes fumble 60 C.
for the most appropriate word to convey my feelings, I have learned to respect and better understand other’s own unique views by better understanding my own.

Others may avoid new activities that are foreign to their present skillset, because often the effort may result in personal distress and discomfort. The challenge of doing something new and taking necessary steps to engage and experience enables positive personal growth.

These are the challenges and opportunities that I search for in my own daily life. I thrive on beginning a new challenge, and I enjoy the meandering course of emotional discomfort I sometimes endure through the process of experiencing.

Why you ask? Because it leads to the greatest potential to further my own personal development by learning and engaging with a new diverse group of people. This discourse allows them to share their own deeply personal unique experiences during our common path of discovery.

It is through this strategy, that I have honed a sensitive approach when communicating with others. My experience is that I have grown and benefitted from some of the most difficult of challenges and I embrace the fear and unease I may experience during the process. As I will teach this idea to my own children, I too hope to foster and grow this approach with my fellow commissioners and future engagement with the community members and public partners.
