3 CITY COUNCIL SUBCOMMITTEE AGENDA REPORT
To: Council Subcommittee regarding Election Issues
Meeting Date: June 6th, 2024
From: Interim City Manager
Subject: Mayoral Rotation
Background
At the Council meeng on May 16th, the Elecons Subcommitee liaisons reviewed and gave their recommendaons to the City Council regarding City districng, term limits and mayoral rotaon maters that was discussed at their subcommitee meeng on May 13th.
Discussion
The council had a robust discussion and evaluated informaon provided and brainstormed alternaves. The topic of mayoral rotaon was referred back to the subcommitee to review and what their recommendaon would be to the council – whether to pursue this as a ballot iniave or not. If they would like it to go to the voters, then the subcommitee should work on the language for the resoluon.
The following is a summary:
• Directly Elected Mayor -
o The Subcommitee recommended that the term of a Mayor be 2 years and restricted to two terms.
o As an alternave the Council could dra a strict rotaon policy and refer that to the voters.
o Under either scenario the Subcommitee is recommending that the role of the Mayor remain unchanged.
