Interests & Experiences
Please tell us about yourself and why you want to serve.

Why are you interested in serving on a board, commission or committee? I am from Argentina originally and bilingual. As a professional in arts education at the college level, curator and independent scholar of art history I have taught and presented at museums, public programs and community colleges for the past 20 years. Prior to that I was the head of the library for New York Magazine. Culture and the arts form the back bone of my education and work experience. Burbank is changing on a daily basis with chunks of real estate transforming before our eyes. The Pandemic has transformed our city and the capacity of public art to contribute to the quality of life of the entire community is essential. It is key to contribute to the process in an uplifting and thoughtful capacity.

Art in Public Places
Describe any qualifications, experience, and education, as well as any technical or professional background you may have relative to the duties of this position.

Part of the qualifications for teaching art history at community colleges, lecturing at museums and giving tours of exhibitions and public art, giving tours of local art museums and architecture involves constantly learning and communicating with artists, foundations and museum curators to understand and participate in our current ability to engage with art as individuals and as a community and to understand and relate to what is possible as expressed in the arts. I have taught Mexican Muralism in Mexico and the legacy of Mexican Muralism in Los Angeles for over twelve years, I have come to know and teach about those who created and create the murals of LA as well as the artists who embodied the Chicano Art Movement as manifested in California. I also know and engage with those who have served to preserve the cultural legacy of LA and in particular of the murals through the Murals Conservancy of Los Angeles. I have given tours of our living patrimony from the sculptures at Forest Lawn to the painted walls of the projects such as Ramona Gardens.

What are your goals in serving on this Board/Commission/Committee? My goal is to understand what is possible in Burbank in terms of public art and to contribute to finding the most beautiful and effective selections for fullfilling what this community can expect through my contacts with artists, patrons and organizations involved in public art making such as Piece by Piece.

I am not
convinced that we have matched the legacy and precedent established for public art in Burbank that we can witness in the murals and architecture of our main post office and the relief decorations of our government buildings.

As an individual who has spent a lifetime studying and communicating about the arts I believe that we can do better.

I would be honored to be a part of this mission.

Special Projects

Principal Investigator: The Illustrated Credenza project brings together replicas of the twenty-three surviving dishes from Isabella d’Este’s credenza. Ceramic artist Ester Mantovani spent two years training with master-painters in Urbania to fashion these wares. Isabella d’Este (1474-1539), daughter of the Duke of Ferrara and consort of the ruler of Mantua, was the most important female art patron and collector of her day. Her credenza is a key element of Renaissance visual culture and embodies rhetorical strategies of self-representation.

I directed and produced a documentary: The Illustrated Credenza, on Mantovani’s working methods in collaboration with Zefiro Films (2014). The film can be viewed at:

3 The Duke’s Enigma, a one-act play investigating the iconography of Giulio Romano’s murals for the Room of the Giants, Palazzo Te, Mantua. Conceived in 2000 as a final project for, ‘Theater and Theatricality in the Renaissance’, a graduate course taught by Professor James Saslow at the City University of New York. In 2005, the play was translated into Italian and performed in period costume by the Campogalliani Theatrical Company in the Room of the Giants at Palazzo Te, Mantua. The Society of Friends of the Palazzo Te and museum Director, Ugo Bazzotti staged the play as a fundraiser for the museum. The production was filmed as part of a RAI TV series on the Gonzaga family.

Interests & Experiences
Please tell us about yourself and why you want to serve.

Why are you interested in serving on a board, commission or committee? When I was nine years old, I painted one of my designs on the fire hydrant in front of my childhood home.

I was happy with the way it looked and with the idea that anyone driving down our street might see it and smile. This established my interest in public art, and I have followed that interest to this day. I am a Black woman, artist, professor of art, and Burbank homeowner and resident. My interest in serving on Burbank’s board for Art in Public Places is multi-faceted, incorporating my personal, professional and civic interests and experiences.

I have lectured to aspiring arts educators at UCLA and, for five years, I worked as a Visual Arts Teacher/Mentor for Theatre of Hearts Youth First – providing visual arts education for predominantly Black and Latinx students, including at-risk and incarcerated youth, and pregnant minors. This training has given me an in-depth understanding of issues related to underserved communities, and especially how art pertains to those issues.

Other Pertinent Skills, Experience or Interests
I attended the National Cathedral School for Girls in Washington, DC and had the good fortune to study cathedral architecture. I consider this experience relevant, in that architecture often is paired with public art, as public art does not exist in a vacuum. In addition, I have traveled to many countries and around the United States. I believe that my exposure to other cultures – and the many modes of human thought and being – is enriching in ways that broaden what I believe I can contribute to the Board.

Art In Public Places
Describe any qualifications, experience, and education, as well as any technical or professional background you may have relative to the duties of this position.

As a professor of Art and Design at USC’s Roski School of Art and Design, I am in the research stage of developing a course that focuses on public art. I believe that serving on the board would allow me to experience the inner workings of the public art process and give me insight into the effects of public art on the people who live and work in Burbank. I am interested in learning about the aesthetic considerations, as well as the values, history and social factors that affect public art decisions. Moreover, as an educator with a Master’s degree in Communications Design, and an undergraduate degree in Art, I would be delighted to share my knowledge with the board, and hopefully, offer insight that ultimately could benefit Burbank communities.

I am a two-time Pollock Krasner award recipient for my nature-referenced sculpture and, recently, the California African-American Museum in Los Angeles, CA selected my artwork for inclusion in the museum’s permanent collection. The District of Columbia Department of General Services recently awarded me a public art design commission with the District of Columbia Public School System.

As a Black woman artist, I believe I will bring a unique perspective to decisions concerning the work selected for Burbank’s public art program.

What are your goals in serving on this Board/Commission/Committee? Being a homeowner and resident of Burbank, serving on the board is of interest to me as I believe that a healthy Burbank arts community supports and promotes healthy Burbank communities of all types. Since I have a vested interest, given that I live in Burbank, I want Burbank communities to thrive. I believe that supporting and promoting artistic expression in Burbank can give residents and visitors alike a positive and well-rounded sense of Burbank.

Please tell us about yourself and why you want to serve.

Why are you interested in serving on a board, commission or committee? There are many opportunities to beautify Burbank with the help of Local Artists I’ve seen living here for over a decade. I’ve worked in an industry of planning and capturing the beauty of shared spaces at my previous and current job, creating shared experiences of captive audiences (which are our tourists and residents). I can also collaborate on ideas on how to share our city and it’s art through video.

Please tell us about yourself and why you want to serve.

Why are you interested in serving on a board, commission or committee? Ever since moving to Burbank, I've wanted to share some of the love and sense of belonging I feel here by reinvesting it in the community. Contributing to the growth and wellbeing of our city has appealed to me for some time, and I have been waiting for the opportunity I know I'm the right fit for. Fostering civic engagement and community involvement is very fulfilling work for me, and to marry that with my art form and field of expertise is - if you'll excuse the cliche - a dream come true.

Education
I spent seven years at the Vancouver School of Arts of Academics in Washington, with an emphasis on Visual Art and Performance Art. My Visual Art education centered around time-based, site-specific installation art, in addition to traditional fine art and illustration techniques.

Art in Public Places Committee
Describe any qualifications, experience, and education, as well as any technical or professional background you may have relative to the duties of this position.

I am a lifelong visual artist, now working professionally in the creative field as a food stylist. I studied traditional visual art as well as site-specific installation art for seven years and have been exploring new techniques and mediums with my personal work in the years since. I have a passion for civic engagement and improving my community, and have participated in organizations and councils to do just that in nearly every institution I've been part of.

What are your goals in serving on this Board/Commission/Committee? I want to see our community spaces reflect the creative spirit that's so abundant in Burbank, and highlight more of our residents' work both to celebrate their ability and to inspire others to try their hand or explore their own art form. I want to give back to the community that's supported me for so long, and doing that by sharing my experience and perspective as an artist is an ideal first venture into the public service side of Burbank.
