AN ORDINANCE OF THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
BURBANK AMENDING THE BURBANK MUNICIPAL CODE
IN ITS ENTIRETY TO REPLACE GENDER -SPECIFIC
LANGUAGE WITH GENDER NEUTRAL LANGUAGE.
City Attorney’s Synopsis
This Ordinance amends Burbank Municipal Code in its entirety to replace gender-specific language with gender neutral language. The purpose of this Ordinance is to update the Burbank Municipal Code so that it is consistent with federal and state laws.
The Council of the City of Burbank does ordain as follows:
I. The usage of gender-specific language reflected throughout the entire Burbank Municipal Code is hereby replaced.
Gendered language shall be replaced with gender neutral pronouns.
Gender-specific language such as “he,” “she,” “him,” “his,” or “her” shall be replaced with appropriate gender -neutral pronouns such as “they,” “their,” or “them” as grammatically appropriate and in a manner that does not change the legal meaning of any provision of the BMC.
Gendered language will be preserved if legally required due to the specific gendered intent of the provision.
(a) The gender neutral pronoun includes the feminine and masculine genders.
(b) “They/them/their” shall indicate a singular individual, unless the context indicates the contrary.
II. The usage of gender neutral pronouns throughout the entire Burbank Municipal Code is hereby accepted.
III. This Ordinance shall become effective at 12:01 a.m. on the thirty-first (31st) day after the date of adoption.
