Please tell us about yourself and why you want to serve.

Why are you interested in serving on a board, commission or committee? I have been employed as a public servant for the past 14 years, and the private real estate sector for the past 5 years, but I have been giving back to communities all of my life. During primary and secondary school ages, my parents had me engaged in various community matters from supporting campaigns of local candidates to being an active member of local community organizations. As an adult I have been supportive of organizations advocating for various disenfranchised groups. For years I have been looking for way to serve my community of residence, and I feel this is a fitting position and time to serve.

Why are you interested in serving on a board, commission or committee? Having become a fairly recent homeowner in Burbank, I'm establishing roots and feel compelled to give back and lend my voice and experience to topics that I care deeply about. Energy conservation, renewables and sustainability are all incredibly important to me, and to the community, and I would be honored to serve on the commission where real solutions at scale can be discussed and implemented.

Please tell us about yourself and why you want to serve.

Why are you interested in serving on a board, commission or committee? I spent six years as a tenants advocate and a founding member of the Glendale Tenants Union. Housing security is a national crisis, but especially pronounced for younger people, seniors, immigrants, and people of color. I'm one of the lucky ones to have bought a house here in Burbank in 2022, but my wife also immediately lost her job upon our moving in so I am hyperaware of just how fragile our 'ladder to the middle class' is. I am a policy analyst for California Housing and Community Development, so my career is deeply rooted in the present experience of housing and the many ways it is supposed to work - and, far more often, the many ways it fails people. Housing is a human right, and wise, equitable housing development is the core of a sustainable future.

Interests & Experiences
Please tell us about yourself and why you want to serve.

Why are you interested in serving on a board, commission or committee? I was brought up to believe that active participation in government is an important duty that coincides with the privilege of living in a democracy. I have been active and vocal in Burbank government since I was involved in an appeal in 2018. Since that time, I have been deeply concerned about matters related to residential housing, property rights, state oversight, and the suppression of freedoms for taxpayers to locally govern themselves. I feel satisfied that the Council has recently enacted a number of changes including DIF updates and zoning ordinances. I feel that I have partially fulfilled some of my goals in this regard. To that end, I’d like to shift my focus to gain a better understanding of overall sustainability goals locally and the influence of state regulations, as well as promote education about gardening & local conservation efforts .

Yes No

If you answer yes, explain in detail any potential conflicts in the same manner as required by the Fair Political Practices Commission’s Statement of Economic Interests (Form 700). (If
you should have any questions about this matter or need further information as it relates to your situation, please advise the City Clerk prior to submitting your application.) AB 1234 Training

First Choice
FIRST choice for Board/Commission/Committee appointment:

Partial / unexpired term:

Sustainability Commission.

Describe any qualifications, experience, and education, as well as any technical or professional background you may have relative to the duties of this position.

I have spent time participating in various hearings on different sorts of matters in Burbank government.

I
have a basic understanding of City procedures and legal process that stems from these involvements.

I
have maintained a food garden for most of the years of my life, starting with my grandfather when I was 5 years old.

I have planted fruit trees at all the properties I've owned in Burbank and would enjoy sharing this passion with the community.

What are your goals in serving on this Board/Commission/Committee? I have concerns that some
of our building ordinances and regulations do not coincide with goals regarding energy conservation, overall carbon-footprint, and that in some cases state building mandates as well as certain regulations, may actually degrade both the long term health of the environment as well as the overall quality of life in our City.

By serving on the Commission, particularly in a shortened term length, I hope to learn more about the Commission's work in the above mentioned areas and determine if the commission would be a good fit to apply for a longer term of service.

I have frequently complained about
problems and would like work toward being able to help find solutions in a formal capacity.

I would also
like to bolster Burbank's reputation as "Tree City", and to ensure that our local codes reflect that pride.

Recently, a healthy 70 year old City of Burbank property tree was removed as part of a building project that could have been avoided, and after investigation, no satisfactory or appropriate reason was given.

I
would like to make sure City of Burbank property trees are better protected in our building codes and procedures.

Finally, I've enjoyed seeing Burbank invest in community gardens, I am also a committed gardener and enjoy growing many sorts of plants with my children, particularly fruit trees and various
vegetables.

I'm not sure that anything I could put on a resume would be especially significant for this Commission, please see attached pictures of what we've produced over the years here in Burbank.
