Please tell us about yourself and why you want to serve.

Why are you interested in serving on a board, commission or committee? I currently serve on the Board of Library Trustees, and the experience has been invigorating to say the least. The advocacy work that we are doing as part of the Board of Library Trustees has been life- changing for me. Being a part of the City of Burbank and playing a role in the improvement of our city and its services these past 6 years has been thrilling work. The ability to be part of something larger than myself has been humbling, and I can't wait to support Burbank and the library for another term.

Why are you interested in serving on a board, commission or committee? I have an interest in the City I live in. It is coming onto a time when I am able to volunteer and give back to our city. The Burbank Public Library has always been an inspiring institution in our lives, so much so that I became involved in our schools’ libraries. Why are you interested in serving on a board, commission or committee? Growing up in small town Georgia the library was a place that felt welcome to all and was a safe space for someone who often felt out of place. The library and the people there helped me to become a life long learner who was curious and empathetic to others. It was such a vital part of my growth and I want to do everything I can to help support our libraries for our incredible Burbank community.

It has been a great privilege these past 4 years as a Library Trustee. After having volunteered at the Central branch I was thrilled with the opportunity to join the board and get to become even more of an advocate for the Burbank libraries. With my background working in Film/TV I was able to help with the opening of Spark Lab and consult on programs and equipment that may be needed and wanted for that space, as well as recruit industry professionals for many of the library focus groups.

What are your goals in serving on this Board/Commission/Committee? I'd love to continue working with the library in getting the word out to our community about all the programs and services they have to offer. The advocacy work we've been doing for a new modern central library isn't done yet and I'd love to continue helping to bring that to fruition. I hope to be an even better board member during this term knowing a bit more about what my duties and responsibilities are and bringing what I can to the team.

Why are you interested in serving on a board, commission or committee? My education and areas of work have been involved intimately with Reading, Expression. Research, Writing. A library is where people, no matter what age, learn these tools, and get a chance to practice these. If I can assist people of all ages to better appreciate and/or to develop skills in these areas, that wouild be a good fit for me. As for the Senior Citizen Board, well I do qualify as a Senior and the same principle applies: use my skills to make life better for Seniors.

FIRST choice for Board/Commission/Committee appointment:

Board of Library Trustees.

Describe any qualifications, experience, and education, as well as any technical or professional background you may have relative to the duties of this position.

In the earlier part of this application, I have expressed how my education, a professional life in teaching English and Writing at an adult level and my personal work in Theater, where I learned to work with others and to help people to express themselves, as well as my experience in writing a memoir ... all add up to a person suited to serving others in library work.

May I mention that a teacher is taught by their students; I like to be challenged, to give something back to others.

What are your goals in serving on this Board/Commission/Committee? Serving on
Library Commission/Committee, I would want to expand the library's outreach to communities which are lacking in either knowledge of what a library has to offer, or those who may need encouragement to use the library.

In short, I'd like yo help library management in whatever its goals are.

Second Choice
SECOND choice for Board/Commission/Committee appointment:

The Senior Commission/Committee ... well, I do belong with that community.

Let's just say, I remember
Harry Truman.

His first term!
I have the same goal that I have for any Burbank volunteer work: to use myself in service.

I'd like to offer to others my personal ideal for this phase of life -- each day is a gift and often we have to learn how to use and how to enjoy that gift.

Describe any qualifications, experience, and education, as well as any technical or professional background you may have relative to the duties of this position I have an actual resume of my teaching career ... somehow I can't seem to find the digital copy of it.

It lists
how I started teaching in Community College as far back as 1978, all the places I taught at and the varieties of subjects in English (mostly Writing) and Theater, acting and directing.

If I am able to redo the
resume, I will send it or bring it in, if and/or when I am interviewed.

Thank you very much.

Why are you interested in serving on a board, commission or committee? I am married and have 1 daughter who is an elementary teacher in Burbank at Washington. I have lived in Burbank since 1955. In September 2002, I retired after working for the Burbank Public Library for 46 years. I have been a library volunteer since January 2003. The library has been important to me all my life. I love the library and all it stands for. I know I could contribute to my community by serving on the the Board of Library Trustees. Since I have a long history with all 3 libraries, my understanding of the library issues would be valuable. I have seen how the library impacts people of all ages in a positive way. I would like to continue helping the library by being on the Board.

Please tell us about yourself and why you want to serve.

Why are you interested in serving on a board, commission or committee? I've always been interested in public service--I take Shirley Chisholm's quote to heart: "Service is the rent that you pay for room on this earth." I was born and raised in Burbank, and I grew up in Burbank Public Libraries. I have strong memories of reading outdoors during the summer as a child at the Northwest Branch, participating in cool science programs at the Central Branch, and waiting excitedly to enter the brand-new Buena Vista Branch. Libraries are one of the greatest tools for encouraging education for all ages. I think my passion for Burbank and its libraries, coupled with my previous experience of serving as an elected City Council member and Library Trustee in a town in VT (where I lived prior to moving back to Burbank to care for my elderly grandmother), would make me a perfect fit to serve in this role.

First Choice
FIRST choice for Board/Commission/Committee appointment:

Board of Library Trustees
Describe any qualifications, experience, and education, as well as any technical or professional background you may have relative to the duties of this position.

I have served on a library board before (when I lived in Barre, VT) and have also served as an elected City Council member (also in Barre, VT), so I am very familiar with public bodies and how they need to operate within the law. I also think the most important experience I would bring is life experience--I would be able to communicate how Burbank's libraries impacted me both as a child and an adult. I would bring perspective about how library services help our community in the present and future.

What are your goals in serving on this Board/Commission/Committee? I want to ensure that children continue to have the same opportunities that I had as a child growing up with Burbank's libraries. I also want to find more ways to communicate the concrete ways that adults (including non-regular readers) can get use out of their library memberships. There are so many exciting things that happen at Burbank's libraries, and I feel like not enough people know about them! I would like to do my part to make sure the library is used by as many people across as many generations as possible.

Second Choice
SECOND choice for Board/Commission/Committee appointment:

Heritage Commission
Describe any qualifications, experience, and education, as well as any technical or professional background you may have relative to the duties of this position I studied American Studies in college, which gave me a solid grasp on the concept of significance for people, places and things--rooted in both historical value as well as cultural impact. I've also served on several non-profit and public government boards.

What are your goals in serving on this Board/Commission/Committee? As someone who grew up in Burbank, and whose parents also grew up in Burbank, places and things that made Burbank a significant place are important to me. I'd be interested in finding ways for Burbank to share its historical and cultural roots. While Burbank may look like a very different community today when compared to when my grandparents moved here in the 1960's, I feel that it's still important to find ways to honor the history of a place, as well as the people who came before us.

Why are you interested in serving on a board, commission or committee? I would like to be of service to my community. I was lucky to grow up in an environment that fostered a sense of connection to others and a dedication to volunteerism. For much of my career my work schedule didn’t allow me much time for community service, but I’m now at a point where I have flexibility in my schedule and enough professional expertise to be an asset to the city of Burbank as a board member.

In addition to the qualifications on my resume, I’m an avid reader and a Burbank Public Library cardholder.

What are your goals in serving on this Board/Commission/Committee? I seek to advocate for the needs of the Library on behalf of the people it serves, and to uphold the Library’s mission to connect the community to opportunities for growth, inspiration and discovery.

My
mother worked for the local public library in my hometown for almost 20 years, and the branch in which she clerked was a home away from home when I was a child. I have seen first-hand the ways in which a public library can enrich a community, provide needed services, and change lives for the better. My goal would be to do what’s in my power to support the Library and its staff while they support their patrons.

Why are you interested in serving on a board, commission or committee? Serving on the Board of Library Trustees has been one of the most challenging, fulfilling and meaningful experiences I've had as a Burbank resident. Being able to support our phenomenal libraries as they rose to meet the many challenges COVID presented was truly an honor, and it helped me grow as a community member and educator. I would like to continue supporting these amazing places that helped support us through truly difficult times. One of our main areas of focus has been advocacy surrounding the building of a new central library. I am passionate about this project and would love the opportunity to help continue to move it forward. I am so thankful to the Councilmembers who allowed me to serve on the Board of Trustees and am hopeful they'll see fit to allow me to serve another term. I believe my continued work in the community and commitment to supporting our public libraries make me a positive contribution to the Board of Trustees and I am hopeful I'll be able to continue.

Describe any qualifications, experience, and education, as well as any technical or professional background you may have relative to the duties of this position. - During my tenure with the educational nonprofit Facing History and Ourselves, I served as the technology liaison for the education team of which I was a part. That role included helping team members, and the teachers with whom we worked, develop digital literacy skills. - Additionally, a large component of
my job as Program Associate was to help the schools, teachers and administrators with whom we worked learn about the many resources available to them, and the ways in which those resources could deepen the work they were doing in their schools and classrooms. - Extensive experience with metrics, data
collection, measuring impact and reach, survey creation and implementation - My work as a member of the Burbank Unified School District Board of Education has given me vital insight into the needs of our students and families as they relate to our libraries. It has allowed me to engage in a more informed way as a Trustee on the Library Board.

What are your goals in serving on this Board/Commission/Committee? Over the past four years, one of our main areas of focus on the Board of Library Trustees has been advocacy surrounding the building of a new central library. I am passionate about this project and would love the opportunity to help continue to move it forward.

I also continue to be inspired by the foresight and
vision of Library Services Director Elizabeth Goldman and would like to continue to find ways to actively support her strategic plan in myriad areas.

As I wrote on my first application, I remain extremely interested in digital and technology literacy, and entrepreneurship and workplace development; two areas that go hand in hand. Helping community members see the library as a place to develop new skills is a goal I am excited to pursue. Be it learning how to craft a resume, sign up for an email account, or pick up a book that opens their eyes to a new point of view, working with the Board to help patrons explore these many possibilities is an exciting challenge. Especially in light of the damage done due to COVID, these services have never been more important.

Our libraries offer so much, well beyond the amazing books that line their shelves. It would be a privilege to be continue serving as part of a Board dedicated to helping those many resources reach our Burbank community.
