Dear Madam Secretary:
The Metropolitan Water District of Southern California (Metropolitan) is pleased to submit this letter of support for Burbank Water and Power’s (BWP) application to upgrade the City’s Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) systemwide. Metropolitan is a state-established water district with 26 member agencies – cities and public water agencies – that serve 19 million people in six counties. Metropolitan imports water from Northern California via the State Water Project and the Colorado River via the Colorado River Aqueduct to supplement local supplies and help members develop increased water conservation, recycling, storage, and other resource management programs. Metropolitan provides all of Burbank’s potable water.
With three years of record-breaking drought conditions resulting in historically low State Water Project deliveries from Northern California, our supply resiliency is being tested like never before. The State Water Project, on average, provides 30 percent of Southern California’s water.
But those supplies have been so dramatically reduced over the past three years that in some parts of the region, we simply don’t have enough water to meet normal demands this year.
Metropolitan and its member agencies have been working together to respond to these unprecedented conditions and stretch our available water supplies.
MWD strongly supports this AMI upgrade project as water conservation is more important than ever. Metropolitan has declared a water shortage emergency. It is critical that every one of our member agencies pursue investments to save water for the long term. We thank you in advance for your consideration of this application.
Sincerely,
William P. McDonnell
Manager, Water Use Efficiency
