Why are you interested in serving on a board, commission or committee? I am the current Chair of the Sustainable Burbank Commission.

Over the last 4 years on the Commission,
I have had the privilege of working along side some very talented knowledgeable individuals.

The
highlight of this current tenure has been updating 2013 GGRP goals including advocating for a Sustainability Coordinator.

We now have a very talented Sustainability Officer who has been partnering with us on a variety of initiatives/ordinances.

Additionally, the Community Engagement Outreach
Subcommittee just launched our first Sustainable Community Education event, Water Conservation, Native Planting and Eco-Resource Fair.

It was a fabulous beginning.

We have several more events
planned for 2023.

I would like to 1) continue to working on upcoming Community Educational Outreach Events, 2) complete the Plastics Ordinance collaborative review/approval process with city staff, 3)work with city staff on updating the City Master Tree Plan, 4) support a local ordinance for banning gas powered garden equipment, 5) continue working with Burbank Community Garden Steering Committee on opening the Hollywood Way/Clark Garden, and 6) update the 2008 Sustainable Action Plan.

I am currently working with BUSD Sustainable Education Action Committee (SEAC) as a Master Gardener.

I am supporting their efforts to replace asphalt/concrete school grounds with natural green space in support of environmental curriculum and mental health wellness, through a BUSD/ TreePeople CalFire Planning Grant Application submitted for 8 of our schools in the district.

If the grant is approved,
each school would get a $100K to design and plan for greening the school grounds.

I bring Master Gardener experience, teaching basic gardening classes, organizing/implementing garden/environmental related programs, establishing school and community gardens, and supporting grant writing activities.

As a retired Clinical Nurse Specialist with a Public Health Certificate I am very concerned about the new research demonstrating a significant impact of climate change on community health.

Especially among our vulnerable residents, residents of color, seniors and children.

We need to do
more to adapt community resources to prevent health related emergencies during extreme heat events during the upcoming summer months.

What are your goals in serving on this Board/Commission/Committee? Continue working with city staff, City Council and community partners to build community resilience by encouraging residents to take positive individual and/or collective action to adapt or mitigate the impact of climate change.

Why are you interested in serving on a board, commission or committee? I have been employed as a public servant for the past 14 years, and the private real estate sector for the past 5 years, but I have been giving back to communities all of my life. During primary and secondary school ages, my parents had me engaged in various community matters from supporting campaigns of local candidates to being an active member of local community organizations. As an adult I have been supportive of organizations advocating for various disenfranchised groups. For years I have been looking for way to serve my community of residence, and I feel this is a fitting position and time to serve.

advisory services to small and medium sized enterprises seeking to maximize the full potential of their real estate investments.

Why are you interested in serving on a board, commission or committee? Hello, my name is Adrine Der-Tavitian and my family and I moved to Burbank about two years ago. In January, I decided to take a career break to become a stay at home mom to my 1.5 year old son. I’ve spent my career working in philanthropy and education. Most recently, I was a Senior Manager at the UCLA Anderson School of Management where I led a diverse array of programming for students, alumni and broader members of the community. Prior to Anderson, I managed relationships and fundraising efforts for the California Community Foundation and Liberty Hill Foundation. I am interested in serving on the Park, Recreation and Community Services Board or Sustainable Burbank Commission because I absolutely love living in Burbank and want to be more involved with the community here. In my short two years here, I’ve found Burbank to be a very friendly city with a deep sense of community. As a mother of a young child, I have found myself using many of the parks and recs facilities with my son and have seen firsthand how these programs are vital for families. I think I would bring a helpful perspective to the Board and hope to serve as a voice for other families. I have also always had an interest in government and public service. I majored in political science in college and spent a summer interning for Congressman Adam Schiff in Washington, D.C.

I believe that both my educational and career background would serve me well on the Board. My background in political science will help me navigate the procedural aspects of the Board, while my MBA will help me evaluate any proposals that have budgetary implications. I’ve also spent my entire career working in the non-profit and public sector, where I’ve worked closely with community groups and a variety of stakeholders to implement programs. I’ve found that it takes great listening skills and a collaborative attitude to successfully bring people together to achieve a common goal. I think these skills would serve me well on the Board. I also believe that my participation in MAEVE would be helpful for the role because so many of the members utilize the parks and rec facilities and programs, and they would be a great source of feedback.

I am interested in serving on the Sustainable Burbank Commission because I care about sustainability and its impact on people and the planet. I learned about the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) at Thunderbird School of Global Management, where I attended graduate school. The SDGs are 17 goals that all United Nations countries agreed to pursue in 2015. They aim to end poverty and other deprivations while improving health, education, inequality, economic growth, climate change, oceans, and forests.

I learned how to apply the SDGs framework to analyze and address global challenges and opportunities in various sectors and regions. I also participated in several projects and initiatives related to the SDGs, such as:
- Conducted market research and feasibility study for a social enterprise that provides clean energy solutions.

Why are you interested in serving on a board, commission or committee? As a resident and educator in Burbank, and having completed the Waste Warrior Program, I am uniquely positioned to contribute and support the efforts around sustainability. I have adopted practices both in my home to promote sustainability, practices that sometimes result in a raised eyebrow or side-long glance between my two adult children. Additionally, the elementary school at which I work has a waste separation program in which EcoKids are trained on the reasons for waste separation. With the support of the PTA, our Eco Kids documented more than 4000 lbs of waste was diverted from the trash between April 3 and May 22. I am would be grateful to be part of the City Commission to continue my contribution and investment in waste reduction.

Why are you interested in serving on a board, commission or committee? I grew up in a small town in Massachusetts where I was exposed to a tight-knit neighborhood and community. At an early age, I learned the value of high-quality community services and facilities. We purchased a home in Burbank in 2016. Our top reasons for buying in Burbank were location and City services. We liked that Burbank has its own water and power, police, and fire departments, as well as schools. My interests primarily encompass activities that take advantage of good community planning.

These interests include: biking on the streets, bike paths, and bike lanes; walking our dog on the sidewalks and in community parks and admiring the treescape; swimming at the Verdugo pool; exercising and relaxing in our parks; hiking the amazing trails in the Verdugo mountains; and studying or reading in the Buena Vista Branch Library. We also feel fortunate to be able to utilize programs offered to Burbank residents such as: shade tree program, appliance rebates, Home Improvement Program, City Wi-Fi, public transportation, etc. In addition, we adopted our first senior dog “Walter” from the Burbank Animal Shelter. My experiences as homeowner, Realtor, Airbnb Host (in MA), and landlord (in MA) give me unique insights into what is important and useful to residents and visitors. I interact daily with clients and Airbnb guests on a wide variety of topics in different communities. For example, I regularly address topics such as building maintenance, landscaping maintenance, Wi-Fi, parking, etc. I am a licensed contractor in MA. I owned a construction business in MA for over a decade before moving to California. Through that work, I managed and implemented residential and commercial construction projects through all steps.

This included managing subcontractors and developing and overseeing budgets. One example is a restaurant remodel I managed. The scope of work included bringing the doors and bathrooms up to ADA compliance. This also included a solution to build a handicap-accessible ramp connecting the preexisting 1800s building and the city sidewalk. I ensured compliance with the zoning and state codes for the ANSUL fire suppression system and heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) upgrades. For residential renovation projects I worked on, I was an early adopter of mini-split/heat pumps (HVAC) systems. With my home in Burbank and rental property in MA, I am hands-on with respect to maintenance issues. I have a knack for evaluating maintenance issues and developing practical and cost-effective solutions. I enjoy learning and keeping abreast of new energy-efficient technologies and solutions.

Because of these experiences, I could provide valuable input to the City of Burbank on topics such as facilities operations and maintenance, construction of capital improvement projects, budgeting, etc. I love living in the City of Burbank. I would like to utilize my unique background to assist the City Council in assessing opportunities, setting priorities, budgeting for projects, and executing City infrastructure and sustainability initiatives for the betterment of the City and community.

Through my work as a construction contractor in Massachusetts, I gained extensive experience working with various city departments and a solid understanding of zoning, planning, and the challenges for both cities and their residents. I am a licensed contractor in MA. I owned a construction business in MA for over a decade before moving to California. Through that work, I managed and implemented residential and commercial construction projects through all steps. This included managing subcontractors and developing and overseeing budgets. With my home in Burbank and rental property in MA, I am hands-on with respect to maintenance issues. I have a knack for evaluating maintenance issues and developing practical and cost-effective solutions to maintenance issues. Because of this experience, I could provide valuable input on topics such as facilities operations and maintenance, construction of capital improvement projects, budgeting, etc.

As a Realtor, I take an active interest in not only the community in which I live (Burbank) but in communities in which I help clients buy or sell. Understanding the various cities’ services and the programs they offer their residents is a valuable resource I offer my clients. For example, when clients inquire, I have steered them to the specific city departments (e.g., building and safety, planning, community development, water and power) to learn more about the property and about community services/rebates. When discussing home ownership, I explain to clients such items as:
function and location of sewer clean-outs, location of whole house water shut-off valve, options for earthquake retrofit, use of their irrigation systems and the need to keep up to date with the watering regulations, and importance of basic maintenance of the HVAC system (e.g., changing the filters) to improve energy efficiency and longevity.

As a Realtor, I try to stay informed about various methods and regulatory requirements (e.g., Burbank’s exposed wood shake/shingle roof ordinance) for residential construction and maintenance. For example, I regularly discuss with clients and contractors about the options for roof replacements and learn about current methods that contractors use. I could use such knowledge in making recommendations for City projects, such as roof replacements.

I also learned about
municipal processes from my partner, who works as a public works analyst for a nearby city. I am knowledgeable about the challenges she and her city face preparing and managing budgets, developing requests for proposals, managing contractors, planning future projects, and implementing City Council directives, while still providing seamless services to the residents, businesses, and visitors. These city services that her team address encompass areas such as parking, recycling/trash, elevators, public restrooms, transit, electric vehicle charging stations, parks maintenance, and overall facilities and buildings maintenance. I would like to use this knowledge I gained of municipal processes and challenges to help the City of Burbank in their infrastructure development and maintenance efforts.

Describe any qualifications, experience, and education, as well as any technical or professional background you may have relative to the duties of this position I have taken an active role in learning how to tread lightly on our environment. It has been a priority of mine for 30+ years. For example, I converted a diesel engine car to run on used vegetable oil. I used recycled saw dust (pellets) to provide heat for a home. I love to upcycle or repurpose items. I restored 1940s metal cabinets for use in our kitchen. I use restored appliances, reuse lumber, repurpose furniture, and teach others how to utilize these resources. My partner and I have taken advantage of the City of Burbank’s and other agencies’ sustainability services and rebate programs for actions such as planting shade trees, assessing the efficiency of our home, installing a pool cover, and replacing our hot water tank with a tankless water heater.

My background in construction and maintenance would also be valuable for this position on the Sustainable Burbank Commission. I was a licensed contractor in MA for over a decade, where I managed residential and commercial renovations, including managing subcontractors doing HVAC upgrades. I was an early adopter of mini-splits and heat pump technology for heating and cooling homes. In my house in Burbank, I researched and evaluated options for replacing our hot water tank. We selected a tankless water heater, which qualified for a rebate due to the water and energy savings. For future City of Burbank water or energy efficiency proposed projects or programs, I could provide input on options, with an eye towards balancing practicality, cost-effectiveness, and environmental benefit.

Serving on the Sustainable Burbank Commission would also be a great learning opportunity for me. For example, I am interested in learning more about whether the word is getting out about the pool cover requirement and rebate in Burbank, how Burbank’s shade tree program or Home Improvement Program compares with other cities, etc. If those programs are not meeting the goals, then I would be excited to offer suggestions for improvements.

What are your goals in serving on this Board/Commission/Committee? This is an exciting and challenging time for sustainability in the world, in California, and at the city level.

There are current notable laws and regulations like organics recycling, requirements for electric vehicle sales, and renewable energy targets. Cities are charged with reducing their carbon footprint. For example, the City of Burbank has set emissions reductions targets and identified implementation measures through its Greenhouse Gas Reduction Plan. I try to live a sustainable lifestyle and I have experience with projects to reduce my environmental footprint. I understand the challenges of offering programs that will be implemented. Programs need to be effective in the long term and embraced by the targeted participants.

This is easier said than done. Actions like recycling can be helpful, but society needs to get on board with the many facets of sustainability. I would be able to provide valuable input and help the City of Burbank explore options to implement sustainability programs that the community can embrace. Citywide sustainability programs designed to reduce the City's carbon footprint can only be successful with practical application, proper implementation, and effective outreach. My background can help in each of these areas.

I learned quite a bit about municipal processes from my partner, who works as a public works analyst for a nearby city. I am knowledgeable about the challenges she and her city face preparing and managing budgets (capital improvement project budgets and operating budgets), developing requests for proposals, managing contractors, planning future projects, obtaining City Council approvals, and implementing City Council directives, while still providing seamless services to the residents, businesses, and visitors. These city services that her team address involve areas such as parking, recycling/trash, elevators, public restrooms, transit, electric vehicle charging stations, parks maintenance, and overall facilities and buildings maintenance.

I was a construction contractor in Massachusetts for over a decade, working on commercial and residential projects. I developed and managed budgets, managed subcontractors, did the hands-on construction work, coordinated with the city regarding permitting, and ensured regulatory compliance. I am regularly involved in maintenance of my house in Burbank and my rental property in MA.

Why are you interested in serving on a board, commission or committee? I would like to continue supporting the development of the Cultural Arts Commission. Having served on the Commission from its' inception, I believe it is important to apply the past learning experiences from the Commission's growth and incorporate the future artistic vision of the community at large into what the Commission does. I am very familiar with what other cities have accomplished in this area and would like to share the very best ideas that would work in Burbank and enhance the artistic expression and art appreciation of its' residents. Cultural arts brings communities together and positively impacts social well being. Additionally, there is great financial potential from art related events and exhibits. A while back, I was asked by a Burbank Business leader from the Studios to "raise the level of cultural awareness of the arts" in this city. It has become my mission to do so.

I have a Master's Degree in Art History and have been teaching Art History at several colleges for 14 years. I have an expansive amount of knowledge in the history and production of art and experience in the discussion and teaching of art to a varied amount students. My knowledge of art and interest in it makes me well suited for working with a variety of cultural institutions. Additionally, I have years of experience in research, writing and copy editing for newspapers and journals. Helpful with organizing and producing events planned by the Commission, I also have experience in party planning and catering.

What are your goals in serving on this Board/Commission/Committee? I have been serving on the Burbank Cultural Arts Commission since 2016 and prior to that had been sitting in on meetings for two years. As a long-standing resident of Burbank, it means a great deal to me to help encourage the continued beautification and cultural enrichment of my hometown. I believe that the arts can be a thriving and very important way in which to spread knowledge and understanding as well as to unify a community. I would like to continue to help in the advancement of that in Burbank.

Why are you interested in serving on a board, commission or committee? Hard to believe it's been four years and a pandemic since I was appointed to the Burbank Cultural Arts Commission. I was only on the commission a few months when the whole world shut down. But that time only strengthened my resolve to help this creative community connect with each other and with the community at large. (It's why we called our Virtual Events "Alone Together") It took me ten years in LA - and the economics of a baby-on-the-way - to finally move to Burbank. One decade, two kids and two dogs later, it has become a real home for me and my family. I’m so thankful for the wonderful school district, the close-knit community and the small town feel mixed with the creative talent from the Studios. My entire professional life has been focused on the arts and education, dating back 20 years when I helped bring theater to Philadelphia's inner-city public schools. The Cultural Arts Commission falls right in my wheelhouse and would be a chance to bring my passion and experience to the Burbank community. I'd like to continue helping bring the spotlight on the arts in Burbank while working with the city to help expand and develop the arts impact in our city. It's been an honor to serve as commissioner and hope to be given the opportunity to continue (and expand) my work for this city's creatives and the community at large.

For the past four years - during some pretty tumultuous times - I diligently served on the Cultural Arts Commission. Leah Harrison first approached me about turning our events virtual, and for the next two years that's the space in which we kept creating and connecting.

I produced over a dozen virtual events,
including the Mayor's virtual tree lighting - https://burbankarts.com/virtually-burbank-events/ Even when
my family and I had to move to the east coast during the worst of COVID times, I continued to work for the Commission.

All of us on the commission knew that connecting artists and the community became even more important when we were all separated from each other.

Since I started college in the early
1990s, I've basically never stopped working in the arts and education.

While at Penn, I directed, produced
and performed in plays that were brought to children at the West Philadelphia inner-city Elementary Schools.

Once I moved to LA, I switched my artistic interests more over to the visual arts. My work's been featured on Howard Stern, at ranker.com and on Starz/Encore.

Most recently, I produced the feature
documentary Other Voices about a group of unlikely friends across the Israel / Gaza border striving for a common peace.

As my resume will show, I've been a fixture of New York Film Academy in Burbank, where I have served as Dean of Students and Screenwriting Dept Chair. I’ve also taught every academic level from middle school to MFA and had my own original work produced by the school.

My contributions
to this school can be seen from the growth of its screenwriting dept to the multiple artistic, athletic and cultural clubs I helped launch to provide a more complete student experience.

Between NYFA, my
Temple and other involvements, I’m often planning one event or another, including the annual Purim Carnival at our Temple.

Previous events included a Film and Music Festival in LA for my undergrad, music supervising a TED TALK in Manhattan Beach, Casino Night Fundraisers and Open Houses at NYFA.

I also became a host / interviewer for numerous events and entertainment industry guests. My interview subjects have included SNL’s Molly Shannon, Ed Begley Jr, and Academy Award-nominated producer Michael Shamberg. This led to my writing and producing THE BACKLOT PODCAST, which utilizes NYFA’s massive library of Q&As and new interviews to help educate while (hopefully) entertaining.

I have worked for years to create work - and to help others with their own creative work - that can reach and speak to an audience. As you may have seen, I'm not afraid of wielding a microphone as needed to help us all work together for the common good.

What are your goals in serving on this Board/Commission/Committee? I'm proud of the work we (and it's a definite WE) did on the commission.

Nine commissioners from such a
wide spectrum of creative and artistic backgrounds working together to foster and empower our creative community.

I'd like to keep going with this commission to help spread the word of not only what the Cultural Arts Commission does but also the plethora of creative and talented people throughout this city.

Even now (I'll admit - it's 2am) I spent the past hours making sure our utility box call for artists is getting promoted and that people know the downtown weekend cultural market has become two nights.

I'd also
like to see BCAC get more involved
- with offering guidance on arts-related city projects... with helping to advise the Parks and Rec on disseminating the grant money from the City Council to worthy recipients.

And at some point, to see more artistic venues populate the media capital ! Four years ago, I wrote "Am I
allowed to admit the pride I feel seeing the Handy Market in "Twin Peaks" or Marty McFly skate past the Burger King on Victory in "Back to the Future?") "
The answer is of course - yes.

It's also the pride I feel
when seeing dozens of students sharing their work at the Betsy Lueke or when so many people checked out of our virtual event about filming yourself better at home.

There's so much great creative work done
here - and still so much more we as a commission can do.

I hope to be part of that on-going journey.

Why are you interested in serving on a board, commission or committee? I love the City of Burbank. My kids attend Roosevelt Elementary. I work up the street at The Walt Disney Company as a copyright and 1st amendment media attorney, and I take great art classes through Park and Recs. We love the parks, shopping at Magnolia Blvd., shopping at the Farmers Market and hiking at Stough. I am interest in serving on a board to be more engaged in this amazing community and to participate in local government. Why are you interested in serving on a board, commission or committee? I am thrilled at the opportunity to serve on the arts commission in Burbank. I am a 15 year resident of Burbank. I have raised both of my kids in Burbank Unified School District and currently own an artistic boutique in the heart of Downtown Burbank. I worked and curated exhibitions all the way from East Coast to West Coast. During the years of pursuing my education in Fine Arts, I had the rare opportunity to meet Artists from different parts of the country. I also exhibited in Seoul Korea, Rhode Island, Manhattan and Los Angeles. Currently I am a member of She Loves Collective. Which has been published in LA Times and various art magazines. Being an artist and entrepreneur, I understand the immense value that the arts bring to our community. Art is a universal language that can unite and inspire people from all walks of life, and I believe that promoting and nurturing the arts is crucial for the betterment of society. By serving on the arts commission, I hope to bring my passion and expertise to the table, working alongside like-minded individuals to enhance the arts and culture scene in Burbank. As an artist, I understand the obstacles that can arise when pursuing a career in the arts. I am committed to advocating for the needs of the artistic community. Why are you interested in serving on a board, commission or committee? I am a filmmaker, writer/director/producer who moved west to Los Angeles in 2005. I brought my family to Burbank in 2018. I've grown to love Burbank and have been looking for a way to get active in government at the local level. The Cultural Arts Commission seems to align closest to my interests and current expertise. I work in the industry, where art and culture meets business, especially here in Burbank. I also dabble in music and would love to help bring more arts opportunities to our city. Why are you interested in serving on a board, commission or committee? Having served on the Sustainable Burbank Commission for 4 years, the past 1.5 years as vice-chair, it's been a privilege and amazing opportunity to be able to participate so directly in the governance of our City and work cross-functionally with staff and Council. I've learned a great deal during my term on the SBC and would like to continue my service to the City. I have a lifelong interest for the field now known as sustainability, which affects every aspect of the built environment (IOB) and open space (Parks & Rec).

Through my long career as an attorney for various companies, I've had the opportunity to advise about legal and business aspects on a wide range of topics including electric vehicle charging infrastructure, biofuels, operations and facilities, corporate energy utilization structure and renewables, ESG, organic agriculture, and corporate social responsibility. In 2018 I completed the Burbank Master Recycler (Waste Warrior) program conducted by the Burbank Recycling Center staff, which included initiating a project to investigate potential utilization of horse manure in a compost program. As I continue to learn more about our City and the challenges it faces, I'd like to continue serving on a Board such as IOB or PRCS that helps to inform and affect the City's activities, priorities and decisions.

My experience in the management of a large organization working with all different types of personalities, and my written and verbal communication expertise will all be vital to improving the function and capabilities of the IOB and its outreach to the entire community. In addition, having been active in Burbank as a community organizer, I have a unique level of expertise for knowing how to connect with residents and then encourage and secure their involvement in discussions about the needs and issues in our city.

My work with infrastructure relates to the resilience of such items, from the collaboration and advisement of those preparing for seismic resilience. While not an engineer or building official, I've spent the last 13 years working in the space, in meetings and on project teams working to address critical infrastructure needs. I've worked on programming maintenance of public right-of-way repair while working for the Mayor and City Council of Los Angeles, and i've worked at understanding the capital planning for cities as it relates to the public ROW. I've also worked on the public engagement side of capital projects like municipal buildings.
