Hello Burbank City Council,
I am writing to ask that you please vote to extend the moratorium for gun stores in Burbank. I am very grateful that this moratorium passed last year, and I want to make sure it stays in place while work on the zoning of gun stores can be accomplished.

About me: I live in a residential neighborhood off the Chandler bike path, there are four guns stores less than a third of a mile from my house. My children cannot walk around the block without walking past a gun store (either direction), I cannot walk my children to (either of their schools without walking past a gun store. At least three of these gun stores have opened up only in the last couple of years. (They were not there when I bought my house 6 years ago.) The massive concentration of gun stores in Burbank is very alarming, especially their proximity to schools and parks. Please help keep Burbank a safe and family-friendly community.

Thank you for reading this.

Sincerely,
Megan D'Arco

Subject: Restrictions on guns & ammo stores
CAUTION: This email originated from outside of the organization. Do not click links or open attachments unless you recognize the sender and know the content is safe.

I am writing to voice my opinion on restricting guns & ammo stores in Burbank.

I am opposed to this. Burbank has far more serious issues. These gun stores are professionally run. There are never any incidents involving them. Now, cannibas stores have had issues with break-in robberies.

How about the unhoused drug addicts and mentally ill that children are exposed to? Many of these individuals have police records and are let back out to continue to terrorize. Children should not be exposed to this.

Burbank has a lot of same type of stores.

Liquor stores
Pizza
Pharmacies
Kabob
Should we also restrict them?
How about restricting development? Our streets are overcrowded. Parking is difficult. Going to a restaurant is a nightmare. There are already too many residents and not enough affordable restaurants. Eating out in Burbank takes a minimum of 2 hours. Always a wait to get seated and served.

As far as the children's safety.... how about restricting the number of BMW's and Mercedes Benz who drive recklessly through our city? Many incidents on Nextdoor of families walking and driving and almost getting hit.

Guns aren't the problem. People are. If the punishments were more harsh for those who commit crimes with guns, etc. maybe they would think twice about coming into our city.

They used to be afraid. Word on the street used to be don't mess with Burbank.

Section 8 housing, which I understand Burbank is increasing will certainly increase crime. Data has proven that in other cities that have Section 8.

I love Burbank and our police are the best. I have lived here for over 30 years. I always felt safe. 1 But now, I never ever drive in Glendale and I feel Burbank has also gotten unsafe. I have to constantly be aware of my surroundings. Drive defensively and pray I get home safe.

Please focus on making our quality of life better. Stop the developing. Crack down on the cars speeding all over the city. Get the mentally ill and drug addicts off our streets.

Read Nextdoor and see all the scary things residents are now experiencing.

Thank you for taking the time to listen to me.

Dear Mayor Anthony, Vice Mayor Schultz, Members of the Council, and City Staff, I am writing today on behalf of Women Against Gun Violence - a 30-year old non-profit organization dedicated to gun violence prevention in LA County, the state of California, and the nation - to ask that you please move forward with the permitting and security ordinance for firearm businesses this evening.
1 This is a critical time for gun safety and in the absence of sufficient federal gun laws, each city should be doing everything it can to regulate the sales, transmission, storage and use of firearms in their communities.

So far this year in America, there have been:
331 mass shootings
11,748 firearm suicides
334 murder/suicides
460 shootings of children, ages 0-11
2,726 shootings of teens, ages 12-17
775 unintentional shootings
and 20,912 gun deaths
...and we are only halfway through the calendar year.

It's no surprise that areas with stricter gun laws experience increased gun safety and less gun violence. But I would like you also to consider the impact regulation of your 14 gun stores might have on the greater LA community and consider its safety as well, in addition to that of your Being essentially the gun store "capitol" of Southern California means you have a responsibility to neighboring cities to ensure transactions involving these weapons are regulated to their highest potential; the guns that are bought in Burbank don't all stay in Burbank. Consider that each gun sold goes on a "journey" where it takes on a life of its own - some will be used for sport, others may be used to carry out deadly crimes - no matter the case, the journey of that gun starts here in your city.

The requirements found in the ordinance tonight will assist in solving gun crimes, reduce the risk of gun thefts from retailers - especially "smash and grab" thefts - as well as the chances for gun accidents to occur on site - especially involving minors who will no longer be permitted on store grounds without a parent or guardian. Notices will remind people of the dangers and risks associated with firearms and also urge people to reach out if they are experiencing suicidal thoughts. All of these are in the interest of public and personal safety and should not be considered controversial.

Many gun businesses will say they have already adopted safeguards to protect their workers and community from incidents like the above - and if that is the case, they should have no problem with these standards being mandated. Some will complain that these requirements are arduous and retrofitting the facilities will be burdensome to store owners - but it will also be an investment to protect loss of inventory that could be far more expensive to them.

While I am urging you to pass this specific ordinance tonight, I am also challenging you to look forward on more ways you can protect your community from the threat of gun violence. Please feel free to contact me to discuss additional local ordinances that would benefit the safety and security of Burbank, and thank you for all you have done so far and that I have faith you will do Sincerely,

Hello Burbank City Council Members,
I appreciate all of your efforts prioritizing our safety in Burbank and I'm writing to support the extension of the Firearm Retailer Moratorium for another year. I understand there is more work to do on zoning changes to keep gun retailers away from our schools, parks, churches and all areas where we thrive as a community. As a longtime resident, I feel safer knowing there is a pause on new firearm retailers opening and you're working to create protective zones in our city.

Thank you,

Hello Mayor, Vice Mayor and Council members - I am emailing to ask Council to approve extending the gun store moratorium on July 18th as per Staff's recommendation.

I can't state the reasons why this is needed better than Staff does in their report to Council:
"Without an extension of the moratorium and an update to the City's current zoning regulations governing firearm retailers, requests for new firearms retail establishments may result in land use incompatibility and put the City at risk of impairing its substantial interests in economically sustainable development, community health and welfare, public image, and urban design."
This issue is about the quality of life in Burbank which is one of the top priorities of Council. I am appreciative that Staff recognizes that the presence of so many gun stores in our city does affect the quality of life for the present and future.

Thank you for supporting the community on this challenge and once again I urge Council to extend the gun store moratorium.

Dear Council Members,
I want you to know that I appreciate all the research and time you have devoted to the Gun Store Moratorium.

Please extend it for a least another year. We do not need this proliteration of guns in our city, in fact it is a time bomb waiting to explode. America has a deadly gun addiction and Burbank does not need to continue to be a party to it.

Please protect our citizens from Gun Violence!!

Hi City Council,
Please extend the gun store moratorium for another year. We need to find a more permanent solution to keep our children and neighbors safe from excessive access to weapons, but time is needed to do that.

Thank you,
Stephanie Schaffer
