8 Back-to-School Safety Tips
Parents Driving Children to School:
• Don’t use cell phones or drive distracted around school zones. • Don’t park across the street from the school. This requires children to cross the roadway during peak time frames for congestion, which reduces visibility and presents a serious safety hazard. • If there is no alternative, parents should park and walk with their children to the nearest crosswalk. • Learn about and use the existing drop-off / pick-up system organized by the school (valet program). • Discuss drop-off / pick-up rules with your children.
• Reduce school zone congestion by carpooling with neighbors and friends. • Do not stop in the middle of the roadway, or double park, and allow your children to exit the vehicle in the roadway. This places children in a dangerous position, as other drivers will attempt to drive around your vehicle.
• To reduce aggressive driving and the pressure of being rushed caused by school zone congestion, parents should plan to give themselves additional time for drop-off / pick-up routines.
