UPDATE ON CAMPUS SAFETY
EFFORTS
John Paramo, Superintendent
RECOGNITION
The Burbank Unified School District is
grateful to the City of Burbank, the Burbank
Police Department, and the Burbank Fire
Department for helping the district address
campus safety concerns.
INITIAL RESPONSE FOR THE START OF
SCHOOL
• Single point of entrance at both comprehensive high schools • Every student is expected to wear a lanyard with their ID to school each day • Students are either identified by their ID or they are admitted into school through the Raptor System
• JBHS: all classes are onsite. There are no classes during the day in the bungalows across the street.
• BHS: Wrought iron fencing installed to address the access issue from the parking lot onto the main campus
ADJUSTMENTS TO SECURITY AFTER 45
DAYS
• Raptor is working with their technology team to make student check-in a one- step process instead of a two-step process
• Additional laptops were dispatched to sites as they function faster than Chromebooks
• The subterranean parking at BHS has been gated with no access • The elevator at BHS is programmed not to give access to the bottom floor • JBHS: Security cameras were installed on campus
ADJUSTMENTS TO SECURITY AFTER 90
DAYS
• BHS: Alarm system installed on the doors of Building 2 that lead to the promenade
• BHS: Cameras installed to face the outside doors of Building 2 outside of the promenade
• BHS: More cameras were ordered for campus security and will be installed ASAP .
• JBHS: Adjustments to campus security are being made to cover overlap between people who manage the doors of the school
SEXUAL ASSAULT/HARASSMENT
MONITORING
• Data pulled from the Aeries database each semester at the 10, 15, and 20 weeks.
• Data is pulled by object code. The district uses consistent coding. • The Superintendent’s cabinet reviews data to ensure proper handling • Data is sent to the board to ensure transparency
• The monitoring and assessing the data ensures consistent handling and gives us a benchmark on what is happening at each school site.
DISCUSSION
• Continued efforts with Raptor
• Continued efforts to build a student culture for
wearing lanyards
• Logistically, it “may” be easier to have two entry points at Burroughs as the main entrance is physically narrow
• The School Resource Program
