Please tell us about yourself and why you want to serve.
Why are you interested in serving on a board, commission or committee? I have been employed as a public servant for the past 14 years, and the private real estate sector for the past 5 years, but I have been giving back to communities all of my life. During primary and secondary school ages, my parents had me engaged in various community matters from supporting campaigns of local candidates to being an active member of local community organizations. As an adult I have been supportive of organizations advocating for various disenfranchised groups. For years I have been looking for way to serve my community of residence, and I feel this is a fitting position and time to serve.

Why are you interested in serving on a board, commission or committee? I'm specifically interested in this Partial-Term appointment to the Sustainable Burbank Commission, since as a former Commissioner I have no desire to compete against an Incumbent who remains capable and eager to serve. Since deciding it was time to return to formal civic service, I've been waiting to apply for just such an opportunity for "new" applicants to open up. I've been involved in the community life of Burbank since first landing here when coming to the LA area in 1999, and by 2004 had established myself in Burbank as a resident ever since. I have a great love of this city and its vibrant community; and not only as a Resident but also the father of a school-aged child I wish to remain a part of helping guide its long-term growth, evolution and sustainability for my years to come and those of my son beyond. In particular, as a long-time Renter and hopefully soon-to-be Burbank Home- Owner a concern dear to my heart is the affordability of housing, both for renters and new owners, as well as offering multi-unit residents increased opportunities for a sense of community investment as well as both financial and social equity. Burbank has no choice for growth except in multi-family housing (as with most of the LA area) and must focus attention on meeting the needs of multi-family residents (owners and renters, both) rather than just single-family home-owners. Furthermore, with the changing economy and increasing work- from-home (or "hybrid" like myself) impacting the city, we need a clear vision of the social, structural and economic changes this will bring to our significantly commuter-impacted city.
We must have the vision and determination to foresee and meat these changes and challenges head on. As a former Commissioner from the early Task Force days of the Sustainable Burbank Commission, I have the advantage of a previous knowledge base of the issues affecting Burbank as well the ability to bring Institutional Knowledge/Experience to the Commission. Nevertheless, I recognize that Burbank and the Commission have both evolved in the past six years, so instead of a "hit the ground running" approach my intention is to remain quiet and listen to learn where the pulse of the Commission is today before offering my potential contributions.

Why are you interested in serving on a board, commission or committee? I am a passionate advocate for social and environmental justice issues. I am a proud member of the LGBTQ+ community and identify as a gay Latino. I am also a person with a disability. I embrace my identity as a source of strength and inspiration. I take pride in serving as a role model and a leader for others who face similar challenges and discrimination. Serving on a Board, Commission, or Committee would help amplify their voices and add a diverse perspective to issues affecting our city. In my personal and professional life, I’ve demonstrated strong leadership, organizational and interpersonal skills in previous roles as a manager, consultant, and volunteer. I have extensive experience working with diverse communities and stakeholders on various projects and initiatives. As a Multicultural Marketing Manager at Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield, one of the large multi-national corporations where I worked and led marketing programs and initiatives for multi-ethnic segments in the U.S., I developed and executed outreach strategies to connect with residents, businesses, and organizations. My goal was to support local health and wellness initiatives and address healthcare disparities in communities with low or no insurance coverage. I have a solid educational foundation and a passion for learning. I love traveling and experiencing new cultures and faiths. I’ve fostered positive relationships and collaborations with other local, national, and international partners and stakeholders. Burbank is a global city. I bring a global perspective and an appreciation for diversity, which has helped me to understand and address the needs and interests of different groups and communities.

Describe any qualifications, experience, and education, as well as any technical or professional background you may have relative to the duties of this position.
I am interested in serving on the Sustainable Burbank Commission because I care about sustainability and its impact on people and the planet. I learned about the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) at Thunderbird School of Global Management, where I attended graduate school. The SDGs are 17 goals that all United Nations countries agreed to pursue in 2015. They aim to end poverty and other deprivations while improving health, education, inequality, economic growth, climate change, oceans, and forests.
I learned how to apply the SDGs framework to analyze and address global challenges and opportunities in various sectors and regions. I also participated in several projects and initiatives related to the SDGs, such as:
- Conducted market research and feasibility study for a social enterprise that provides clean energy solutions.
- Collaborated with a team of students and faculty to
organize a forum on sustainability and innovation, featuring speakers from the UN, NGOs, and academia. - Virtually attended the annual climate change conference, COP22, which brought parties together to accelerate action toward the goals of the Paris Agreement and the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change.
What are your goals in serving on this Board/Commission/Committee? I want to help create and implement a sustainable city action plan for Burbank that covers sustainability's environmental, social, and economic aspects. Sustainability is about making our community more livable, healthy, and resilient. It’s about providing fair and equitable housing for seniors, low-income workers, disabled, and homeless populations. It’s about ensuring safe streets, and easy access to multimodal transportation such as dedicated bicycle lanes, pedestrian walkability, and electric public transit. It’s about conserving water, creating green spaces, and improving air quality. Sustainability affects all of our lives. I want to be part of the solution and make a positive difference.

Describe any qualifications, experience, and education, as well as any technical or professional background you may have relative to the duties of this position.
I have been a designer and behavior change expert for over 20 years. At the moment, I work in the field of healthcare where I help solve "wicked" problems relating to health behavior change, caring for chronic conditions, and general population health. My field is called service design because, unlike website design, it involves researching and planning for all aspects of a service or program to ensure that is useful to the organization and the end users, usable by fitting easily into their existing processes with minimal behavior change, and used by as many people as possible because it is pleasant, easy, and/or solves a problem. I use research, design thinking techniques, behavioral economics, and organizational change strategies to do this. While I don't have a specific background in sustainability, all of these skills are highly relevant to any successful initiative or program that Burbank would implement.
What are your goals in serving on this Board/Commission/Committee? To ensure that we find and enact sustainable initiatives that are both impactful to our community and the environment and easily adopted by the stakeholders. Too frequently, we use policies and regulations to try to encourage behavior change, but we don't account for the feasibility or desirability of the change, leading to low adoption, confusion about the rules, and frustration on the part of the citizens. I want to find solutions that work within the existing context of people's lives and bring the community together rather than dividing it.
