PROPOSED RESOLUTION PROVIDED BY MEMBERS OF THE COMMUNITY JULY 7, 2024, VIA E-MAIL

Israel-Hamas Resolution
WHEREAS on October 7, 2023, Hamas, the governing authority of the Palestinian people living in Gaza, violated a ceasefire and launched a deadly terrorist attack against the State of Israel, which resulted in the largest indiscriminate mass murder, torture, and rape of Jews since the Holocaust. Twelve hundred innocent people were killed, nearly 5,000 were injured, and more than 250 were abducted. To this day, 116 hostages remain captive in Gaza; and WHEREAS the government of Israel responded in self-defense to the crimes of war and aggression by the terrorist organization Hamas; and
WHEREAS the ongoing conflict in Israel-Gaza has claimed the lives of so many, impacting our community locally. Los Angeles is home to the second largest Jewish community in the United States, many of whom have close family, friends, or acquaintances who were kidnapped and/or murdered by Hamas on October 7. __[insert City name]__ residents of Palestinian descent who have ties to Gaza have also experienced enormous loss during this time of war, as the casualties in Gaza which are in the thousands, continue to rise; and WHEREAS the Palestinian people in Gaza are facing a grave humanitarian crisis and in need of immediate provision of food, water, medical care, clothing, and emergency shelter; and WHEREAS world bodies, including U.S. President Joe Biden, have repeatedly called for the immediate release of all hostages taken on October 7, and the complete dismantlement of Hamas as necessary conditions to establish a negotiated ceasefire in Gaza; and WHEREAS Hamas, whose stated goal is the destruction of the State of Israel and the murder of Jews, and whose position of authority in Gaza is antithetical to creating lasting peace, continues to reject ceasefire negotiations while using Palestinian civilians as human shields.

NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the City of _________ seeks:
• To affirm its commitment to inclusion and advancement of diversity and equity for people of all ethnicities, national origins, and backgrounds, including its long-standing and uncompromising opposition to antisemitism, Islamophobia, and all forms of hate and incitement to violence.
• To ensure our community is safe and welcoming for the people we represent and those we serve.
• To underscore that there is no justification for spreading hate and intolerance toward any group.
