2 Vision Zero Background
Goal: Eliminate traffic-related fatalities across all modes of travel within a specified period
Breaks from traditional planning/engineering in two
major ways:
1. Recognizes that mistakes happen, and the severity
can be minimized through safer street design.
2. Streamlines and focuses multidisciplinary approach
to roadway design and management.
3 The Six Safe System
Principles
1. Zero deaths/serious injuries
2. Humans make mistakes
3. Humans are vulnerable
4. Responsibility is shared
5. Safety is proactive
6. Redundancy is crucial

Trade-Offs of a Vision Zero Plan
• Slows vehicle speeds
• Restricts vehicle throughput
• Deprioritizes vehicle congestion
• Requires City to modify legacy policies
• May divert existing traffic
• May affect emergency response
9 Safer Streets Burbank Taskforce
1. Develop shared language and understanding of
the Safe Systems approach
2. Share knowledge of related efforts across the City
3. Guide the development of the Action Plan
4. Continue serving as implementors of Safe Streets
