FIRST choice for Board/Commission/Committee appointment:

Art in Public Places Committee
Describe any qualifications, experience, and education, as well as any technical or professional background you may have relative to the duties of this position.

I bring an integrated understanding of messaging and visual interpretation to this committee. As a former marketing and communications executive, I understand the impact that targeted and strong artwork can have to promote and inspire those who view it. As a fundraising executive, I have implemented campaigns that combine carefully crafted visual presentations. These efforts yield greater results and increased income, proving that a well- constructed visual campaign adds exponential value. In college I studied art history and the importance of public art to influence and reflect a community. By representing the priorities of society as well as the persona of the art patron, public art enriches a community, provides aesthetic value, and reflects a vision of public priorities.

What are your goals in serving on this Board/Commission/Committee? I value the beauty of buildings like the Burbank City Hall and Post Office combined with the contemporary storefronts of Downtown Burbank and trendy Magnolia Blvd. My goals in serving on the Art in Public Places Committee would be to 1) Preserve the historic, classical elements of Burbank while creating a desirable environment for new business expansion and growth, 2) Provide an opportunity for local artists to display their creativity, utilizing the resources of local businesses, 3) Raise public awareness about important community issues, and 4) Promote community pride.

Second Choice
SECOND choice for Board/Commission/Committee appointment:

Burbank Housing Corporation Board of Directors
Describe any qualifications, experience, and education, as well as any technical or professional background you may have relative to the duties of this position
As the former Chief Development Officer for Union Rescue Mission, I learned about the housing challenges facing Los Angeles as the organization looked to expand its services into family housing. While the constituency we served differs than the City of Burbank, many of the challenges remain the same. I learned the solutions require a balance between business and residential growth, and I bring that understanding to the Board.

Mary Lou Gilliland
What are your goals in serving on this Board/Commission/Committee? My goals in serving on the Burbank Housing Corporation Board would be to help solve some of the great challenges facing society on a local level. This includes priorities to: 1) Create affordable housing, 2) Maximize the usage of city resources, 3) Promote economic growth through thoughtful urbanization,
and 4) Provide a better quality of life for residents.

FIRST choice for Board/Commission/Committee appointment:

Burbank Housing Corporation Board of Directors
Describe any qualifications, experience, and education, as well as any technical or professional background you may have relative to the duties of this position.

I served on my condo association board in various roles of ascending responsibility. I began my service on the Board as the Recording Secretary. My last role on the condo Board was President. I served as President of the condo association board for two terms. Each of my terms as President were for 2 years. My last two year term was served after I'd moved here to California, being elected remotely and handling the role as President remotely.

What are your goals in serving on this Board/Commission/Committee? Housing is an extremely important issue for the nation as a whole and this important issue necessarily effects our Burbank community, a well. It is an issue that we want to get right.

I
firmly believe that any issue of importance requires input from various people and perspectives to get right. It also requires people who are willing to put in the hard work and make competent decisions. I feel my life experiences, and skills have prepared me to contribute substantially to working to find the best solution for our community. I understand that there's no perfect solution, we won't be able to please everyone and that compromise will be necessary. I think my ability to analyze the big picture and help forge solutions will be invaluable. Thus, my goals in serving on this Board are to help achieve an acceptable solution to a very difficult problem facing our community.

SECOND choice for Board/Commission/Committee appointment:

Art in Public Places Committee
Describe any qualifications, experience, and education, as well as any technical or professional background you may have relative to the duties of this position
While working at Morningstar (International Mutual Fund Reporting Agency), I was a member of the Art Selection Committee. This committee researched local, national and international artists and their works. We then met with select artists and bought art pieces, sometimes commissioning original pieces for the Headquarters location. Further, when I travel, both nationally and internationally, I often research artists that are from that particular locale to purchase, as artists have traditionally charged lower prices for their works when sold in their place of residence.

What are your goals in serving on this Board/Commission/Committee? In recent years Burbank has installed some amazing pieces of art throughout our community spaces. I anticipate that practice will continue. As this is an area of interest for me, I'd like to be a part of that decision making process.
