Why are you interested in serving on a board, commission or committee? As a 30+ year resident of Burbank, I have a deep-rooted connection to our city and a passion for art and culture, making me a strong candidate for the Art in Public Places Committee.

With extensive experience in the creative and entertainment sectors, including roles at The Walt Disney Company, Warner Bros., and my own company, Eyethink Design—all based in Burbank—I understand how art and creativity shape community identity and foster civic pride. I bring a unique blend of skills and perspectives that would greatly benefit the committee. My three decades in the entertainment and creative industries have provided me with a deep understanding of visual storytelling, brand development, and community engagement through art. I have managed creative teams, overseen large-scale art and media projects, and collaborated with cross-functional teams to deliver impactful creative solutions.

Having raised my children in Burbank public schools, my kids utilized Burbank’s incredible local talent through art classes offered by Burbank Park and Rec, building a foundation for creative success and a lifelong love of the arts. I even taught an extracurricular class on storybook design and publishing at Roosevelt Elementary. I am deeply invested in our city’s unique blend of creative influences and its thriving community of content creators and studio talent.

Beyond my professional experience, I am actively
involved in community organizations such as the L.A. Conservancy, Burbank Arts & Education Foundation, and The Art Deco Society of Los Angeles. These roles have given me valuable insights into preserving and promoting public art and culture. As a founding member of the Save Magnolia Park Committee, I collaborated closely with city officials— including the Mayor, City Council, and Planning leadership—to advocate for preserving the unique character of the Magnolia Park corridor, demonstrating my commitment to the cultural and artistic fabric of our city. My experience in launching and supporting a nonprofit double-bottom-line entity has sharpened my ability to identify partnership opportunities that benefit all stakeholders. Service is a core guiding principle in my work and community involvement.

I believe that art serves as a bridge for unifying diverse communities and enhancing public spaces—elevating Burbank’s reputation as a must-see tourism destination and fostering the next generation of world-changing creatives. I am eager to contribute my expertise and passion to the Art in Public Places Committee, as my experience in both the entertainment industry and community advocacy aligns perfectly with the committee’s mission to enrich Burbank’s public spaces through thoughtful and impactful art projects.

Public art is crucial in enhancing community spaces and fostering unity by creating shared experiences and sparking conversations that transcend cultural and socioeconomic boundaries. In our beloved city, known as the “Media Capital of the World,” public art is more than an aesthetic addition; it reflects our diverse community, rich history, and creative spirit.

From public libraries and utility box murals to the Chandler Bike Path and Holiday in the Park, we showcase to the world where creativity springs from: Burbank! I envision public art in
Burbank as a tool to celebrate our city’s unique heritage while pushing boundaries and inspiring innovation. Art in public spaces can transform everyday environments into engaging places that encourage dialogue and connection among residents. It can also highlight Burbank’s status as a cultural and creative hub, attracting visitors and fostering pride among locals.

Through strategic placements and thoughtful selection of art projects, we can create a cohesive and inclusive narrative that honors Burbank’s past while embracing its future. I am particularly interested in projects that involve community engagement, allowing residents to feel a sense of ownership and pride in their surroundings.

I look forward to you considering my application for the Art in Public Places Committee role! Education

What are your goals in serving on this Board/Commission/Committee? If selected for the Art in Public Places Committee, my primary goal would be to enhance Burbank’s public spaces through dynamic and meaningful art installations that reflect our city’s rich cultural heritage and creative spirit. Through these goals, I hope to

Why are you interested in serving on a board, commission or committee? Living in Burbank has been a wonderful experience for my daughter and me. We have benefitted greatly from the neighborhood we live in, from the local vendors and shop owners, and from the services provided by the City of Burbank. As a result, I would like to give back some time to the city, offering my time and skills by serving on a committee or board.

FIRST choice for Board/Commission/Committee appointment:

Art in Public Places Committee
Describe any qualifications, experience, and education, as well as any technical or professional background you may have relative to the duties of this position.

I bring an integrated understanding of messaging and visual interpretation to this committee. As a former marketing and communications executive, I understand the impact that targeted and strong artwork can have to promote and inspire those who view it. As a fundraising executive, I have implemented campaigns that combine carefully crafted visual presentations. These efforts yield greater results and increased income, proving that a well- constructed visual campaign adds exponential value. In college I studied art history and the importance of public art to influence and reflect a community. By representing the priorities of society as well as the persona of the art patron, public art enriches a community, provides aesthetic value, and reflects a vision of public priorities.

What are your goals in serving on this Board/Commission/Committee? I value the beauty of buildings like the Burbank City Hall and Post Office combined with the contemporary storefronts of Downtown Burbank and trendy Magnolia Blvd. My goals in serving on the Art in Public Places Committee would be to 1) Preserve the historic, classical elements of Burbank while creating a desirable environment for new business expansion and growth, 2) Provide an opportunity for local artists to display their creativity, utilizing the resources of local businesses, 3) Raise public awareness about important community issues, and 4) Promote community pride.

Second Choice
SECOND choice for Board/Commission/Committee appointment:

Burbank Housing Corporation Board of Directors
Describe any qualifications, experience, and education, as well as any technical or professional background you may have relative to the duties of this position
As the former Chief Development Officer for Union Rescue Mission, I learned about the housing challenges facing Los Angeles as the organization looked to expand its services into family housing. While the constituency we served differs than the City of Burbank, many of the challenges remain the same. I learned the solutions require a balance between business and residential growth, and I bring that understanding to the Board.

Mary Lou Gilliland
What are your goals in serving on this Board/Commission/Committee? My goals in serving on the Burbank Housing Corporation Board would be to help solve some of the great challenges facing society on a local level. This includes priorities to: 1) Create affordable housing, 2) Maximize the usage of city resources, 3) Promote economic growth through thoughtful urbanization,
and 4) Provide a better quality of life for residents.

Second Choice
SECOND choice for Board/Commission/Committee appointment:

Art in Public Places Committee
Describe any qualifications, experience, and education, as well as any technical or professional background you may have relative to the duties of this position
While working at Morningstar (International Mutual Fund Reporting Agency), I was a member of the Art Selection Committee. This committee researched local, national and international artists and their works. We then met with select artists and bought art pieces, sometimes commissioning original pieces for the Headquarters location. Further, when I travel, both nationally and internationally, I often research artists that are from that particular locale to purchase, as artists have traditionally charged lower prices for their works when sold in their place of residence.

What are your goals in serving on this Board/Commission/Committee? In recent years Burbank has installed some amazing pieces of art throughout our community spaces. I anticipate that practice will continue. As this is an area of interest for me, I'd like to be a part of that decision making process.
