Why are you interested in serving on a board, commission or committee? I am interested in joining the Burbank Planning Commission, motivated by a strong alignment with the city's strategic goals for economic development, homelessness, affordable housing, community development, and sustainable growth. My professional background, education, and training have uniquely prepared me to contribute to the Commission's work, ensuring that Burbank remains a vibrant, inclusive, and sustainable community. Professional Expertise and Experience: I bring over a decade of experience in project management and executive management within the commercial and residential development space. My experience has sharpened my ability to control complex projects from inception to completion, ensuring they meet both commercial objectives and community expectations. Educational Background:
My educational foundation includes a Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, providing me with a deep understanding of the mechanics behind construction and development projects. My technical knowledge is complemented by a UCLA Managerial Accounting Certificate, which has equipped me with the skills to understand financial statements and assess the impact of budget changes on projects. These educational achievements have prepared me to approach planning and development with a comprehensive technical and financial perspective. Leadership and City Operations Understanding: I split my time between Burbank and the City of Indio. I have already participated in the City of Indio Leadership Academy, which has enriched my understanding of city operations and the multifaceted challenges faced by city planning commissions. Since completing the academy, I have been seeking the right opportunity to join and give back to the City of Burbank I call home. This experience has provided me with valuable insights into the inner workings of city governance, including zoning, community engagement, and balancing public and private interests in urban development. My Vision for a Thriving Burbank: My vision for Burbank is a city where every individual has the opportunity to thrive, underpinned by a compassionate and comprehensive approach to homelessness. I envision a community where homelessness is managed and significantly reduced through proactive prevention, timely intervention, and robust support services.
My strategy encompasses providing immediate relief through emergency shelter and ensuring sustainable solutions via increased access to affordable housing and a spectrum of supportive services tailored to the diverse needs of those in distress. This vision reflects my commitment to dignity, care, and opportunity for all residents, aiming to transform the challenge of homelessness into a story of hope and recovery. I dream of a Burbank where affordable housing is not a goal but a reality for every resident, supported by a framework of housing assistance and grants designed for low-income families. My collaborative spirit shines through partnerships with local organizations, fostering community development projects that enhance our urban landscape and strengthen our community's social fabric. This holistic approach to housing and grants is a cornerstone in my quest to build a more inclusive, supportive, and vibrant Burbank. Central to my aspirations is promoting sustainable growth and development that resonates with the heart of Burbank—preserving the rich tapestry of our city's character and history while embracing the future with open arms. The Planning Division is the steward of this vision, meticulously implementing the General Plan to guide our city's evolution. This plan is a living document reflecting our collective dreams for growth that harmonizes with our environmental, social, and economic values. By working closely with developers and the community, I ensure that every new project meets our current needs and seeds the future we envision. My overarching commitment is to a flourishing Burbank—where economic growth, social inclusivity, and environmental sustainability are not competing interests but harmonious elements of our shared journey. A Burbank that stands as a beacon of progress, compassion, and resilience, demonstrating what is possible when a community unites behind a vision of a better tomorrow for all its members. Together, we are crafting a legacy of a Burbank that is remembered for what it was and revered for what it will become. Collaborative Spirit and Commitment to Community Engagement: My approach to project management and community engagement has always been collaborative, emphasizing the importance of partnership between the city, its residents, and developers. I am dedicated to ensuring that the planning process is inclusive, considering the needs and aspirations of all Burbank residents, and fostering a community spirit that makes our city a desirable place to live, work, and raise a family. In conclusion, my blend of professional experience, educational background, leadership training, and connection to and vision for Burbank positions me as a dedicated candidate for the Planning Commission. I am eager to apply my skills and insights to contribute to the city's development, ensuring Burbank remains a vibrant and nurturing community for generations. I look forward to the opportunity to serve and make a lasting impact on the future of Burbank.

Why are you interested in serving on a board, commission or committee? I want to use my professional urban planning experience, my Master's degree in Community Economic Development and Housing, and the hundreds of connections I've made in our community to provide the critical planning analysis necessary to faithfully serve our City. I've watched and attended dozens of council and commission meetings and understand what's expected both as an expert in the field and a representative that is responsible to the public.
I just placed fourth in the most recent city council campaign and spoke to residents citywide (at their doors!) about their neighborhood- and city-level experiences and concerns. I am compelled to stay active and responsive to our community's needs, and my talents and expertise are uniquely suited to the planning commission. I see my own participation in the City's affairs as the best way to create options for my children to one day be able to live independently in Burbank. I want them to take pride in growing up here, and then have real housing options when they come of age.

I just ran for City Council and placed fourth. My team and I knocked on 18,000 doors in the City, and I personally knocked on 3,700. I'm a member and/or I attend the meetings of about a dozen local progressive, Democrat, civic and advocacy groups. I'm trying to start a boxing club in the area, and if I ever have real time, I'd want to join a regular Dungeons and Dragons guild at Geeky Teas, which is just down the street from me.

Describe any qualifications, experience, and education, as well as any technical or professional background you may have relative to the duties of this position.
I am a professional housing policy analyst with the State of California - specifically, the Department of Housing and Community Development's Accountability and Enforcement Unit.
I have performed housing element reviews both in the ordinary course of my work and also off-the-clock as a community advocate looking for (and finding!) potential conflicts. This gives me a unique perspective - I am intimately familiar with State housing regulation and will help mitigate the loss of local control over our neighborhoods while never losing sight of our very real Regional Housing Needs Assessment (RHNA) obligations. I know how to navigate and analyze State laws, local ordinances, neighborhood specific plans, Streetmix cross-sections, infrastructure plans, standard design proposals, and more. I was the State's subject matter expert on SB9 the first year of its existence and have been a subject matter expert on ADU law since joining HCD. All this to say I have the experience to meaningfully contribute to the conversation.
Furthermore, and just as important as the professional
expertise: I have lived the experience of buying, and nearly losing, and living in constant fear of losing, my home. My wife and I are millennial homeowners, the only ones we know our age who bought a house without financial support from our families, but less than a week after moving in my wife (seven months pregnant at the time) was laid off. We have struggled, really struggled, to keep our place here, spending half our income on our mortgage as the second owners of what used to be considered a "starter house". Burbank's future cannot look like my present.
What are your goals in serving on this Board/Commission/Committee? I want to thread the needle - balancing the necessity of development while avoiding the worst impacts of State regulation. Having studied the last century of urban design, I want to do my part in turning the boat and promoting wise development that will directly address our housing affordability crisis.

Why are you interested in serving on a board, commission or committee? I am a native Californian living in Burbank for fifty years.
Our family has participated in and
donated to Burbank-Youth Sports, after school activities, PTA and we have volunteered to elect School Board Members.
I feel it is important for me to use my years of experiences related to Planning and volunteer some time to the Burbank Planning Commission.
Our
family business was based in Burbank for more than 15 years.
I’m very aware of Codes and
Ordinances and applicable Planning Commission
procedures.
I have in depth (hands on)
experience working with Codes, Ordinances Plan Checks, Permits and Certificate of Occupancy.
We purchased commercial properties for our Burbank business as it grew. I’m well aware of the Permitting processes and other codes and ordinances required to obtain Certificates of Occupancy to establish a business in Burbank as well as owing a home in Burbank. I have in depth (hands on) experience working with Building Codes, Ordinances, and Government Agencies at all levels. I have worked directly with the United States Justice Department. I have been a committee member on State of California Code Authorities committee, National Standards Authorities committee and many others. I have presented ADA code regulation enforcement seminars to Code Enforcement Agencies as well as at numerous ADA Conventions regarding codes and equipment available for disabled. Burbank is a very desirable location to live, work and raise a family. Burbank’s standard of living is being challenged by recent State of California actions such as: SB 10 up to 10 Units on a single property without CEQA, SB 35 where new housing has not met Allocated Targets, must use a streamlined, ministerial review process for qualifying multifamily projects, and AB 2011 Middle Class Housing Act to allow residential development on sites zoned for commercial or retail uses, to name a few. I will provide my skills and experiences to the Planning Commission in furtherance of the goals established for Burbank. Burbank is the media capitol of the world I would consider it an honor to serve Burbank on the Planning Commission.
With the population growth being experienced in Burbank, resulting in increasing demands on the power grid
by electric vehicles, thousands of new residential
apartment units, office towers, sound stages, and
the airport expansions, I will be a valuable
asset to the Burbank Planning Commission.
