WATER AND
POWER
Public Health Goals Report
Required under California Health &
Safety Code
Applies to water utilities with more than
10,000 service connections
Completed every 3 years
2022-2024 has been completed
2 Purpose of Public Health Goals Report
Notifies residents if constituent in water supply
exceeds Public Health Goal (PHG) or Maximum
Contaminant Level Goal (MCLG)
PHGs and MCLGs set at very conservative levels
to protect consumers against low to negligible
risk
PHGs and MCLGs are not legally enforceable as
they are set below the regulatory definition of
what is considered “safe” by federal and state law
3 What are PHGs and MCLGs?
California’s PHGs measure concentrations for carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic contaminants
MCLGs are federal equivalent of PHGs and apply to
contaminants for which no PHG exists
Six constituents exceeded the public health
goal, but
none exceed the legally binding
standards set by federal and state
regulations
4 Burbank’s water meets all federal and state
drinking water standards and is safe to drink
