National Library Week was held from Monday, April 5, 2021 - Thursday, April 8, 2021.

Throughout the week, library members had the chance to participate and share a variety of activities that highlight the importance of libraries and their services. For every activity of the

week, participants sent us their pictures, videos, or thankful messages to post in our library Facebook Page. The following were the activities held:

1. Picture that Book! - Participants sent us a picture of their favorite book/audiobook/magazine along with a message of why reading matters or how reading influences their life.

2. Why i love my library? - Participants expressed their appreciation for their local library and their services.

3. "If / were an author..."- Writing and drawing activity mainly for school-aged children but adults were able to participate too.

4. National Library Week Proclamation- signed by Mayor Rosie Arreola-Fernandez

5. Biblioteca Pública Central Estatal de Mexicali- offered a virtual tour of their library on Friday, April 9, 2021 via Zoom. It was in a webinar format open to the public of all ages.

6. Weekly programs- In addition, our weekly programs were also offered during the week:
babytime, crafty Tuesday, storytime, Manga/Anime club, ESL/Tutor sessions, and Let's Talk Conversation group.

Dia del Nino Family Night
The Día del Nino family night virtual event was held Friday, April 30, 2021 at 4:00 p.m. via Zoom. Our sponsor for this event was the Imperial Regional Detention Facility. They were able to provide us with plastic bags, and a color yourself bookmarks. An LSTA grant received allowed us to purchase crayons, glue, and books to add to our children's collection. Thanks to their donation, we were able to provide children with a packet that included a bookmark, crayons, glue, craft, and a book. A free snack sponsored by the Calexico Neighborhood House was also provided in the packets. Mrs. Legaspi happily shared that approximately 70 kids out of 173 registered attended the virtual event and 99 kids picked up a packet. Special guests included Jamie Chew and Karolina Lopez from the Calexico Recreation Department. They made kids laugh with their magic tricks, juggling, and dance moves. Also, Vice-Chair Alarcon and Hortencia Armendariz joined us during this special event. Everyone was having a wonderful and fun time.

Next Project:

Mother's Day- Picture Request
As Mother's Day approaches, the library is voluntarily requesting a picture from mothers with their kid(s) so that a video is created and shared in our Facebook page. Pictures are submitted to [email protected] and the deadline for submissions is Friday, May 7, 2021 at 5:00 p.m.

On motion by Vice-Chair Alarcon and seconded by Chair Duron. The minutes from meeting held on April 5, 2021 were approved as delivered.

BUSINESS ITEMS:

Emotional Health & Awareness Presentations for Kids/Teens and Adults Since schools are back in session and businesses are opening, it seems that things are going back to normal. Even though we have been hoping to go back to normal, there is fear and anxiety of being in a group with many other people. Also, parents debating whether to send their kids to their classrooms or not. As we go through this post-pandemic way of life journey, it would not hurt to have some tips to benefit families and adults. The Camarena Memorial Library has partnered with the Imperial County Behavioral Health Department to host two emotional health and wellness workshops via Zoom to discuss the pre and post pandemic journey of many. It is opened for the first 100 participants that show up and information for the whole family will be provided. The following is the schedule of the two workshops:

Upgrade of Library's Website
The library's website is currently undergoing an upgrade that started on April 19, 2021 and will take about a month to complete. The purpose of this update is to have a cleaner and manageable software edition.

On Thursday, May 27, 2021, there will be a virtual program for the public to meet local author Charlie M. Zamarripa on his most recent published collection of poetry. There will be a question-and-answer session after his reading. There will also be signed book copies available

Literacy Newsletter
The literacy newsletter is an additional source resuming in the adult literacy services area. Mrs. Legaspi stated that literacy assistant, Elsa Pliego, put together a May 2021 literacy newsletter located in our library website under the adult services tab. The purpose of the Camarena Memorial Library literacy newsletter is to inform the public about our adult literacy services such as: programs, resources, announcements, and accomplishments from our tutors/learners. Mrs. Legaspi hopes the literacy newsletter gets published monthly.

Library Board of Trustees Comments:

Trustee Espino plans to promote both mental health awareness workshops to her students via the Canvas platform. She thinks it is a very important issue to consider and wants to motivate her students to continue succeeding in their goals. Trustee Espino support this event and is very excited for this workshop.

Chair Duron asked who provides the funding for the Zip books. Mrs. Legaspi replied that the state provides the funding for Zip books.

Vice-Chair Alarcon asked if in the future the zip books funding will resume. Mrs. Legaspi commented that it is unknown if this service will resume but hopefully it does in the near future.

Mrs. Legaspi asked everyone that attended the meeting if they prefer to continue to meet via Zoom or at the City Council room. Everyone agreed to continue the meetings via Zoom.

INFORMATION:

Attendance Report- Mrs. Legaspi reminded library board members to keep track of their attendance. If there are three absences during a calendar year, the person automatically gets removed from their library board position.

Vity Cuterdar of Activities- The month of May includes lots of fun and informative programs for everyone. In addition, the Summer Family Reading Program 2021 is approaching. We plan to continue offering virtual programs during the summer until it is safe to hold in-person programs/activities.
