SUBJECT: Informational Item: Camarena Memorial Library's Family Summer Reading Program 2023
==== =================== ======222=== ===========
Recommendation:
It is recommended that the City Council of the City of Calexico receives information about the Library's Family Summer Reading Program.
Background:
The Camarena Memorial Library provides programs and resources to meet the educational, recreational, and cultural needs of the community to encourage lifelong learning and the pursuit of knowledge. One of the goals of the family summer reading program is to foster the love of books and reading and help students prevent the summer slide, which is the loss of learning that happens during the months children are not in school. The Family Summer Reading Program is a free and fun alternative for families during the summer. There is a variety of programs on a daily basis for all ages.
Most of the programs offered are implemented by library staff. To offer a wider selection, staff looks for partnerships to augment their program repertoire.
This summer, we continue to partner with Calexico Neighborhood House to provide snacks and lunches for children ages 1-18; Imperial County Free Library to continue offering Raise a Reader Storytimes and Libraries on the Spectrum programs, and Imperial County Office of Education Early Care and Education Program to offer additional Storytime programs for children ages 0-5.
AGENDA
In addition, grants are procured to augment funding. This year, the ITEM Lunch at the Library Grant will allow us to hire one additional staff member to help us during the summer and to purchase books and educational resources that will positively benefit the community and help 24 them build their home libraries.
Discussion & Analysis:
Camarena Memorial Library offers an 8-week Family Summer Reading Program every year. Our program is open to all residents of the Imperial Valley and includes programming for people of all ages. "All Together Now" is the theme for this summer reading program which will run from June 20t through August 10'h, 2023. The Lunch at the Library program will provide a daily craft activity for 13 weeks from June 5t through August 31st, 2023, and a literacy bag on a weekly basis to the first 40 families that join us.
The California State Library also made available several digital platforms such as GetSetUp, Skillshare, LinkediN Learning, Learning Express Library, Brainfuse Help Now, Coursera and Northstar Digital Literacy so that users can indulge in learning at their own pace. The Camarena Memorial Library continues to offer English as a Second Language classes all through the end of June and will resume in September. The Adult Literacy Services program where one-on-one tutoring is available for adults continues to be offered all year round.
Summer program registration is open. The community is encouraged to register for the program by visiting the library's websites https://calexicolibrary.org and/or https://spanish.calexicolibrary.org Information about our daily programming is available via social platforms, the library's websites and the city's website.
