SUBJECT: Adopt a Proclamation for Library Card Sign-up Month ========== ===================================
Recommendation:
It is recommended that the City Council of the City of Calexico adopts a Proclamation for Library Card Sign-up Month for September 2023.
Background:
Since 1987, Library Card Sign-up Month has been held each September to mark the beginning of the school year. There's nothing more empowering than a library card. During this month, Camarena Memorial Library joins a national effort to ensure every child signs-up for their own library card. Through access to technology, media resources and educational programs, a library card gives students the tools to succeed in the classroom and provides people of all ages opportunities to pursue their dreams and passions.
Discussion and Analysis:
A library card opens the door to an array of possibilities. From borrowing books, eBooks, park passes, toy backpacks to getting homework help, learning new skills, or attending a library program such as Storytime, Baby Time, STEAM Lab, ARTsy Days, Literacy Tutoring sessions, Senior Fridays, etc., a library card provides many opportunities to do more of what you enjoy. A library card is the most important school supply - it's elemental, really -and everyone should have one no matter their age.

WHEREAS, libraries play a crucial role in the education and development of children, from storytimes for preschoolers to college and career planning for high schoolers, fostering literacy and a love of reading; WHEREAS, libraries are welcoming and inclusive spaces for people of all backgrounds to learn together and engage with one another across cultural, ethnic, generational, and economic lines, strengthening the social fabric of the communities they serve;
WHEREAS, libraries strive to develop and maintain programs and collections that are as diverse as the populations they serve and ensure equity of access for all; WHEREAS, libraries help people of all ages navigate the complexities of life, providing access to research, information, and government services that allow everyone to lead more productive and fulfilling lives;
WHEREAS, libraries contribute to a strong economy by providing access to the technology and training that are critical to the success of job-seekers, entrepreneurs, and students; WHEREAS, in times of crisis, libraries and library professionals play an invaluable role in supporting their communities both in person and virtually;
WHEREAS, the shared resources libraries offer reduce the number of items households buy and dispose of, providing a simple way to save money, conserve resources, and reduce waste; WHEREAS, a library card sparks creativity and empowers all people to explore new passions and interests and pursue a path of lifelong learning;
WHEREAS, libraries are cornerstones of democracy, promoting the free exchange of information and ideas for all;
THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that I, Raul Vreña, Mayor of the City of Calexico on behalf of the Calexico City Council do hereby proclaim September 2023 as Library Card Sign-up Month. I encourage everyone to sign up for their own library card today.
