It is recommended that the City Council of the City of Calexico approve the Resolution with the following actions:
Adopt a Resolution Authorizing the City Manager to Execute the 2024 Lunch at the Library Grant Program in the amount of $27,167 and Authorize the City Manager and the Fiscal Agent to Sign the Certification, Award Agreement and Certificate of Compliance and any Amendments Thereto; and any Related Documents Necessary to Participate in the Program.
Background:
The Camarena Memorial Library has been providing free snacks year-round in addition to complete with funds from the State of California.
Discussion and Analysis:
Many families rely on breakfast and lunch available to students during the school year. This benefit ends when school lets out for summer. During the summer, many low-income families have reduced or limited access to nutritious meals, enrichment programs and safe spaces to congregate. As resource- -
rich, accessible, and trusted community institutions, libraries are natural spaces for serving summer meals to children and teens.
Lunch at the Library provides children and teenagers with meals, summer reading programs, and other activities that support learning, health and wellness. It brings new families to the library where staff can connect adult family members with essential resources and services, and it sparks and supports community collaboration.
