I have extensive experience working in the creative arts. In addition to multiple degrees in Fine Arts and years experience teaching art at the high school and college level-I have worked with cities and schools throughout Southern California to create public works. I would like to apply for this project because I think it is important to provide an example to my students that participating in the arts is a worthy and satisfying experience.
2. PROPOSED PROJECT
Ours is an agricultural community. Growing a salad bowl in the desert is a perfect example of hope coming to fruition, and the people who should be most honored in the process are the laborers who feed our nation. They kept us alive so that we could hope for a better future.
There is nothing kinder, more encouraging, more hopeful, or more respectful of life than celebrating those who worked to preserve these things. In my image, you will see a scene that is familiar to all of the Imperial Valley's citizens- a man working in the field. I have added a golden band to represent the invaluable nature of what they do. #2

1. ARTIST STATEMENT
Please describe why you are interested in creating artwork for this project and your previous experience creating artwork, if any.
Beautification of my community is the reason why I started my art career as a public artist 5 years ago. Since then, I have made it my mission to not only beautify, but to educate and raise awareness about important issues affecting our community. I have worked on many public murals portraying the history of anime, celebrating language diversity, agricultural workers, local flora and fauna, and some for decorative purposes for local restaurants and business. My continued interest in public art made it possible for me to become assistant art curator at the Steppling Art Gallery in SDSU-IV. Finally, I have led live painting courses at IVC and have received a variety of awards, grants, and natural/international mural competition prizes. Education and art have been lifelong passions of mine, complimenting them both has been a pillar to my pursuit of a successful career in arts.
2. PROPOSED PROJECT
Please describe your proposed artwork design and its meaning This artwork is my way of blending beautification and raising awareness in my community. Many of us are attracted by the sea and marine life for a variety of reasons, but my hunch is that it's something exotic to us as we live in a desert valley. I have always tried to keep a piece of the marine world inside my house with different aquariums, I would like to share that joy with others in my community. The flora and fauna depicted in this design is not local, as I am accustomed to.painting, it is a marine environment that is alien to most of our day to day lives. On both of the wider sides, I chose to add a sign with the phrase "It is better to light a candle than to curse the darkness." One im English and the other in Spanish. This is a Chinese proverb that I first read in my now favorite book "The Demon- Haunted World:Science as a Candle in the Dark. It is a phrase that, in my perspective, can be very helpful for humanity as a whole because it teaches to look for solutions instead of complaining about our problems. It is much better, to teach people than to complain about misinformation. The reader can apply this to a variety of problems affecting our local community and the entire world.

1. ARTIST STATEMENT
Please describe why you are interested in creating artwork for this project and your previous experience creating artwork, if any.
I am currently a digital graphic design student and aside from working on designs typically associated with graphic design I also create personal artworks in my free time, whether in digital or in traditional mediums. I believe that sharing the art is important, especially in communities such as ours that are small and connected. By displaying artwork created by members of the community we can create a bigger sense of identity and give life to the town, for both residents and people passing by to admire.
2. PROPOSED PROJECT
Please describe your proposed artwork design and its meaning.
The artwork is composed of various koi fish swimming around from a birds eye perspective. Koi are representative for love and friendship, which can be seen as the fish are not just swimming around but also interacting with each. other. Additionally, they can be seen as a symbol of peace and prosperity. For these reasons, the artworks represents familiar love, the act of understanding each other, and living in peace. #8

Please describe why you are interested in creating artwork for this project and your previous experience creating artwork, if I am interested in creating artwork for this project because I think Calexico needs a change and Art will always be a way to motivate and uplift residents as they pass by and make them proud of the city they live in. I really like that local artists are given the oportunity to participate in beautifying our city and being able to share the talent they have. I believe that projects like this can get our community closer and get more residents and youth involved. I teach Art needs support from our city leaders with more events and projects like this one. I would love to be part of this project at a High School level and I am very passionate about what I do. There is a lot of talent here in Imperial Valley who and spread the word that Calexico is chaging and is changing for Good!
2. PROPOSED PROJECT
Flease describe your proposed artwork design and how it relates to one of the related themes.
My proposed project shows Virgin Mary when she appeared to San Juan Diego at the hill of Tepeyac in Mexico. I followed for many years. Even thought I was born here in the United States the fact that we live just a fence away want to share with my Calexico city my roots and traditions my immigrant parents have taught me and we have from: Mexico makes me even more attached to the Mexican traditions and folklor. My artwork depicts HOPE during and afte the pandemic many of us went through difficult times but my faith in Virgin Mary kept me moving forward. I also became a mother in 2020 and identified even more with her as this protective mother over her son. I know that many of our Calexico residents also went through some though times and 1 would like for them as they pass by my ariwork to remember that there is hope and everything will be okay if they have faith. The Virgen de Guadalupe for me is a representation of kidness, hope, faith and love.
