AGENDA STAFF REPORT
DATE: April 3, 2024
TO: Mayor and City Council
APPROVED BY:

PREPARED BY: Eduardo Ainza, Acting Fire Chief
REVIEWED BY: Sandra L. Fonseca, Interim Finance Director SUBJECT: Adopt a resolution authorizing the City Manager to purchase equipment for the Fire Department with reimbursable funds awarded by the Community Benefit Grant Program.
=====
Recommendation:

Adopt a resolution authorizing the City Manager to purchase equipment for the Fire Department with reimbursable funds awarded by the Community Benefit Grant Program.

Background:

The Fire Department applied for a competitive grant in the amount of $25,000 from the Imperial County Community Benefit Program on Aug 29, 2023. The County of Imperial made these funds available under their Community Benefit Program Phase 3 for the following activities.

1. Community Services

2. Community & Economic Development

3. Wildlife & Habitat Conservation
The maximum amount of $25,000 was awarded to the Calexico Fire Department in September of 2023, and has recently advised that equipment can now be purchased.

Discussion and Analysis:

The grant application was submitted with the intention to supplement general fund contributions to provide personal protective equipment (PPE), as well as begin the updating of equipment to the industry standard of battery-operated small equipment to include extrication and ventilation tools. All personnel have since been outfitted with new PPE and SCAs, allowing for these funds to be used towards new battery powered equipment. The utilization of battery powered equipment allows for faster and more efficient deployment on scene, as well as a decrease in our carbon footprint. The equipment this grant will provide include two positive pressure ventilation fans, two cut-off saws, two scene lighting sets, as well as flashlights for personnel. All of this equipment will provide the Calexico Fire Department with tools to continue improving the level of service provided to the community.
