SUBJECT: Adopt a Proclamation for Library Card Sign-Up Month ========= ========================================= === Recommendation:
It is recommended that the City Council of the City of Calexico adopts a proclamation for Library Card Sign-Up Month for September 2024.
Background:
Since 1987, Library Card Sign-Up Month has been held each September to mark the beginning of the school year. During this month, Camarena Memorial Library joins a national effort to ensure every child signs-up for their own library card. Through access to technology, media resources, books and educational programs, a library card gives students the tools to succeed in the classroom and provides people of all ages opportunities to pursue their dreams and passions.
Discussion & Analysis:
A library card opens the door to an array of possibilities at Camarena Memorial Library. From borrowing books, getting free access to digital platforms, park passes, toy backpacks to getting homework help, learning new skills, or attending a library program, a library card provides many opportunities to do more of what you enjoy. A library card is the most important school supply, and everyone should have one no matter their age.

WHEREAS, libraries are essential for the education and development of children, offering everything from preschool storytimes to college and career planning resources for high school students, nurturing fiteracy and a love for reading;
WHEREAS, libraries are committed to creating and maintaining diverse programs and collections that reflect the communities they serve, ensuring equitable access for all; WHEREAS, libraries assist people of all ages in navigating life's complexities, offering access to research, information, and government services that enhance productivity and fulfillment; WHEREAS, libraries boost the local economy by providing critical access to technology and training for job- seekers, entrepreneurs, and students;
WHEREAS, during times of crisis, library and their staff play a vital role in supporting communities both in- person and virtually;
WHEREAS, the shared resources provided by libraries help households save money, conserve resources, and reduce waste, offering a simple way to make a positive impact; WHEREAS, a library card ignites creativity and empowers individuals to explore new interests and pursue lifelong Learning;
WHEREAS, libraries uphold democracy by promoting civic engagement and the free exchange of information and ideas for alli
WHEREAS, libraries, librarians, and fibrary workers are joining fibrary supporters and advocates across the nation to celebrate Library Card Sign-Up Month;
NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that I, Camilo Garcia, Mayor of the City of Calexico on behalf of the Calexico City Council do hereby proclaim September as Library Card Sign-Up Month. I encourage all residents to sign- up for a library card today.
