Recommendation:
Adopt Budget Amendment Resolution for Fund No.255 - American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) in the amount of $16,300.00 to purchase desktop computers, a laptop, drinking fountain replacement and alarm system repairs for the Carnegie Technology Center Background:
The Carnegie Technology Center has been a branch of the Camarena Memorial Library since its renovation in 2008. The center is equipped with computers, Wi-Fi, printing, and scanning services, and it has served as the home for English as a Second Language (ESL) and U.S. Citizenship classes. It also provides areas where students can complete homework and where tutors and learners can meet.
Classes in basic computer use, email, and social media have been offered there as well.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and a reduction in staff within the library department, the Carnegie Technology Center was closed to the public. Nevertheless, ESL and Citizenship classes have continued there for the past two years. When the City Council of the City of Calexico adopted the Final Budget for Fiscal Year 2024-2025, an allocation of $35,000 was included for the replacement of air conditioning units at the Carnegie Technology Center.
Discussion and Analysis:
In August 2024, two air conditioning units were replaced at the Carnegie Technology Center. These units were specifically adapted for the upstairs area of the building, where the computers and seating are located. There is currently $16,300.00 remaining in the account. Library staff plan to reopen twice a week for four hours each day to provide adult literacy services to the community.
The existing computer equipment is over 15 years old and needs replacement. The remaining funds can be used to replace six desktop computers, one laptop, a water drinking fountain, and to repair the fire alarm system. It is recommended that the City Council of the City of Calexico adopt the Budge Amendment Resolution for Fund No. 255 - American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) in the amount o $16,300.00.
