Recommendation:

It is recommended that the City Council of the City of Calexico approve the Resolution with the following actions:

Adopt a Resolution Authorizing the City Manager to Execute the 2026 Lunch at the Library Grant Program and Authorize the City Manager, Fiscal Agent or his designee to Sign the Certification, Award Agreement and Certificate of Compliance and any Amendments Thereto; and any Related Documents Necessary to Participate in the Program.

Background:

The Camarena Memorial Library has been providing a complete daily meal since June 2024 thanks to a partnership with the Calexico Unified School District. The California State Library is making funding available to libraries who provide high-quality summer meal programs and offer programming alongside the meal service, introduce families to summer reading and other programs. Lunch at the Library is a project of the California State Library, supported with funds from the State of California.

Discussion and Analysis:

Many families rely on breakfast and lunch to be available to students during the school year. This benefit ends when school lets out for summer. During the summer, many low-income families have reduced or limited access to nutritious meals, enrichment programs and safe spaces to congregate. As resource-rich, accessible, and trusted community institutions, libraries are natural spaces for serving summer meals to children and teens.

Lunch at the Library provides children and teenagers with meals, summer reading programs, and other activities that support learning, health and wellness. It brings new families to the library where staff can connect family members with essential resources and services, and it sparks and supports community collaboration.

In addition, this grant provides the funding to hire two temporary assistants for the duration of the program.

Fiscal Impact:

None at the moment.

Coordinated With:

None.
