Comments Last year the city council approved the Zero Emissions Bus plan(ZEB) for our city’s transit system, the CAT. However this plan does not amount to any meaningful transportation
improvements. It does nothing to improve or expand the service of a system whose fixed routes don’t even operate fully at all peak times and a dial-a-ride service which requires a reservation at least a day in advance, any self-respecting transit agency has greater leeway than that. This lack of action comes at a time when climate action is urgently needed to get people out of cars and into more green forms of transportation, and billions of dollars in state or federal grants are available to do this. Luckily the city of Camarillo can change its plans as needed because the ZEB is a living document. So, the city of Camarillo must change the plan and drastically improve public transportation in order to fix the current woefully inadequate situation.
One solution is for the city of Camarillo to join the Gold Coast Transit District(GCTD) as allowed under AB 664, which was passed in 2014. This way Camarillo could work with the district over the coming years to develop meaningful city bus routes along Camarillo’s main thoroughfares and serve all of Camarillo.
At the same time capital costs would be much lower than if Camarillo decided to rebuild its public transportation on its own 1 as the GCTD’s central maintenance facility could simply be reused for Camarillo’s buses and GCTD’s in-house expertise could be fully utilized. So, Camarillo’s largest capital costs would be the buses and bus stops themselves. Whatever the solution, the 70,741 people of Camarillo need better public transportation, and the current plan under the ZEB comes way short of realizing this need.
