Comments Dear Camarillo City Council,
At your July 9th meeting, I brought to your attention the violent assault and kidnapping that took place in our community on June 30th. A man was forcibly pulled from his vehicle after ICE agents—or individuals claiming to be ICE—shattered his car window and detained him. The video, which circulated widely on social media, clearly captured the man repeatedly asking the individuals to identify themselves. They refused. He informed them he had legal representation and a scheduled court date, they ignored him and proceeded to shatter his windows and drag him out.
I informed this Council that a 911 call was made, and Camarillo PD was dispatched to the scene. Concerned with the outcome, I submitted a Public Records Request for the incident report to ensure a thorough investigation had been conducted. Thanks to the assistance of the City Clerk, I did finally receive a response. I have attached those records here.
The response from Camarillo PD/Ventura County Sheriff
provided the record of the 911 call. However, they also stated they could not locate any report filed by the officer who 1 responded. This means:
No report was taken.
No record was made of the witness statements gathered that day.
No verification was conducted to confirm whether those
individuals were legitimate ICE agents or impersonators.
No investigation into the felony vandalism of that man’s vehicle was initiated.
Vice Mayor Tennessen, as a former law enforcement officer, is that an acceptable way to handle a 911 call reporting a possible kidnapping and felony vandalism?
Do unreported crimes make our community safer?
Mayor Kildee, after the raid on July 10th, you put out a public comment you are committed to “safeguarding the dignity and well-being of everybody that calls Camarillo home.” Do you believe that was done on June 30th? You also said the Ventura County Sheriff would continue to maintain public safety. Did they maintain public safety that day when they didn’t even file a report?
I am calling on this Council to demand accountability from our local law enforcement. To insist they do their job—protect and serve us. Demand transparency. This incident is yet another public example of perceived cooperation with ICE—and inaction only deepens that perception.
We need you to act.
Thank you.
Blanca Ortega
