July 2025
City of Camarillo Public Library is where discovery leads. We offer information resources that nurture learning andstrengthen the community. We are open to the public Monday-Thursday 10 a.m.-8 p.m. and Friday-Sunday 10 a.m.- 5 p.m. For access to our digital resources, please check our website: www.camarillolibrary.org.

Things are heating up at the Library with dynamic
summer offerings. On Wednesdays, the Children’s
Department hosts Summer Reading Adventure
performers, drawing close to 300 participants each
week. In July, the adventure took us to space-themed
programs. Attendees enjoyed events like Mr. Electric’s
High Energy Show, which featured exciting science
experiments, and a Space Builder building block
activity that allowed kids to create space-themed
creations using different types of Legos®. Children are encouraged to read throughout the summer, and
we’ve had over 900 children and teens sign up for the
Library’s Summer Reading Program.

July is Disability Pride Month, and Adult Services hosted local organization PathPoint, which runs day
programming for Autistic and otherwise disabled
adults. Participants from PathPoint spoke about what
Disability Pride Month means to them, sharing their
perspectives with an audience of 37. Afterwards,
attendees participated in activities and meaningful
conversations with members of our diverse community. Disability Pride Month with PathPoint Wanderlust is in the air. Adult Services staff hosted an engaging session titled Planning the Perfect Trip.

Eight patrons discussed the essentials of do-it-yourself travel planning. Following the session, multiple phone calls and emails were received from patrons seeking more information. In response, a PowerPoint presentation was shared with those who requested it.

Adult Literacy and ESL supported 50 volunteer tutors and adult learners who practiced reading, writing, and speaking for a total of 208 hours throughout July. We had 18 active tutors who contributed 138 hours, and 32 active adult learners who contributed 170 hours.

The Adult Literacy Center continued to host three weekly Conversation Groups—two in person and one via Zoom—for a total of 13 sessions in July. We had 90 participants from around the world practicing their listening and speaking skills, with support from 34 volunteer tutors and Adult Literacy/ESL staff.

Beginning August 5, Adult Literacy will offer a new Tuesday evening Conversation Group at 6:30 p.m., accommodating learners unable to attend during daytime hours. Since the announcement, staff have received many inquiries, showing strong interest and support for the new time slot.

This summer, staff visited several day camps in Camarillo to encourage kids to sign up for the Summer Reading Adventure. To promote healthy habits, staff distributed “Healthy Eats” scavenger hunt cards. Kids who completed and returned the card received a new paperback book to keep. In total, staff engaged with nearly 500 children during these outreach efforts.

In July, RFBC focused on stress relief by offering Summer Destress Kits in partnership with Adult Services. These kits were designed to support patrons’ personal and
professional well-being, and included curated
book/resource lists, coloring cards and sensory stickers.

Over 70 patrons claimed all the kits within two weeks. One grateful patron shared, “My sister is really going through it and could use all the help she can get.” A digital version of the kit was made available once the physical kits ran out.

The RFBC’s Summer Reading Adventure continues to
thrive, with 40 new patrons joining the bingo-style
challenge this month. Participants earn tickets for a drawing to win gift cards to local businesses by completing various tasks. One challenge invites participants to suggest future RFBCprograms. Suggestions received so far include: a personal finance class for teens, a localbusiness owner panel, résumé assistance and workshops on avoiding phone and internet scams. The Business Services Coordinator has already begun incorporating some of these ideas into upcoming programming.

The Summer on a Budget digital resource remains a popular tool, with 577 visits in July. Designed for those seeking budget-friendly activities, this resource has proven effective—analytics show that 82% of participants accessed the page via QR codes on flyers located in theLibrary, indicating strong engagement from current patrons. This insight will help shape future RFBC content and outreach.

Summer on a Budget will remain available through the end of August.

The Summer Reading Adventure will continue through August 17, with a prize drawing on August

20. Winners will receive a $50 gift card to one of the following local small businesses: The Bookworm, Cafe Ficelle, Malone’s Metaphysical or Deeply Rooted.
