Comments = Dear Council Members,
I am writing as a long-time resident of over 20 years to express my deep concern and disappointment regarding the City Council’s recent decision to approve the installation of 15 additional Flock surveillance cameras, bringing the total to 25 citywide. The commitment of $174,500 in subscription fees over the next two years is, in my view, a troubling and irresponsible use of taxpayer money.
I do not consent to being surveilled at nearly every turn in my own community. The growing presence of these cameras makes me feel as though we are slipping into a world reminiscent of Black Mirror or George Orwell’s 1984 where constant monitoring becomes normalized. This is not the direction I believe our city should be heading.
Beyond my personal discomfort, I am also deeply concerned about the potential harm these cameras pose to my neighbors. The data collected can be accessed or shared in ways that put vulnerable people at risk. Individuals dealing with stalking, domestic violence, or potential targeting by external agencies such as ICE could face real and serious dangers if their movements become traceable through these systems. No resident should have to fear for their safety due to Flock camera surveillance.
For these reasons, I urge the Council to reconsider the expansion of this program and, ideally, move toward reducing or removing these cameras altogether. I have already begun discussing these concerns with my neighbors, many of whom share similar anxieties about privacy, safety, and the long-term implications of constant monitoring.
I respectfully ask that you take these concerns seriously and prioritize the civil liberties and safety of the community you represent. Additionally, I urge you to research how data collected by Flock cameras have been used for malicious intent in other jurisdictions.
Thank you for your time and attention.
Best,
Lilah Guerra
