Comments Dear Camarillo City Councilmembers,
My name is Molly McCoy and I am a youth organizer with
Climate First: Replacing Oil and Gas, writing in as I am unable to attend tonight's meeting in person. I would first like to thank you all for supporting our fossil fuel phase-out resolution, which has been a long time coming and is greatly appreciated! As
someone who's grown up in Camarillo, I am proud that my hometown is taking a stance to push for climate progress and position our beloved community as an environmental leader for years to come. We've faced a handful of climate disasters over the years, from the Mountain Fire to the Thomas Fire, along with extreme heat waves and droughts, and this resolution will build a path to do our part to help reduce our contributions to this accelerating crisis. But Camarillo is far from the biggest contributor to the climate crisis and growing cost of living and insurance rates, fossil fuel companies themselves have long 1 known about the dangers of climate change and continued to follow business as usual, pumping out billions of greenhouse gas emissions all for their profit and gain. They should be the ones to pay for their messes, cities like Camarillo shouldn't be forced to pick up the bill for all of the wildfires and other climate disasters these firms knowingly and willingly created. Especially as city budgets grow tighter and tighter, and grant funding becomes all too competitive as state budgets are squeezed to fill federal gaps, cities and communities deserve financial support from the corporate entities that started this crisis to begin with. Please consider adding in language to support California’s Climate Superfund Act, which will create a statewide collective funding pool from taxing fossil fuel producers, which can then be redistributed to cities all across California to build resilient infrastructure and protect ourselves from future climate disasters.
