BACKGROUND
Staff provides the Library Board of Trustees monthly updates on activities at the Camarillo Public Library.
DISCUSSION
A Library & RFBC Activity Report for January is included as Attachment 1, featuring Library Highlights, Professional Development, Literacy/ESL and updates on the Russell Fischer Business Collection (RFBC).
The library promoted Black History Month with several programs for children, teens and adults. Ina Buckner-Barnette, known as the Sunshine Storyteller, led music and movement rooted in African and Black American storytelling traditions for children.
Licensed cosmetologist Shenee Randolph shared the rich history and cultural significance of braiding and locs with teens, and afterwards they were able to receive hands-on braiding instruction. We welcomed Ventura County Research Library docent and researcher Andy Ludlum, who presented stories of African American voices from Ventura County. In addition, we invited California State University Channel Islands English Professor Raquel Baker to lead a discussion on Black Speculative Fiction. The Black History Month programs we offer play a role in supporting the City of Camarillo’s Strategic Plan by providing opportunities to foster an inclusive and accessible environment for all.
Additional activities and programs planned for March are listed in the March Camarillo Library Newsletter, included herein as Attachment 2.
