Comments Silence is not neutrality. Silence is consent.
As members of the Camarillo City Council, you are entrusted with more than infrastructure, zoning, and budgets, you are entrusted with representing the people who call this city home.
Camarillo is not separate from the rest of the country. We are not insulated from the consequences of policies that are actively reshaping rights, protections, and the balance of power in this nation.
Many of us have participated in the City’s own community engagement efforts, like the Las Personas Community
Academy, where we were encouraged to believe that civic participation matters, that our voices matter. But participation without accountability is hollow. Engagement without
leadership is performative.
1 Across the country, we are witnessing the real time
implementation of an agenda that is dismantling diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts, weakening civil rights protections, rolling back reproductive healthcare access, and stripping protections from LGBTQ+ individuals, all while expanding executive power with fewer checks and balances.
And we must be explicit about another community bearing the weight of these actions, our undocumented neighbors.
Families are living with heightened fear of detention and separation. Workers who are essential to our local economy, who harvest our food, sustain our industries, and contribute to this community every day, are being pushed further into the shadows, with fewer protections and greater vulnerability to exploitation. Access to basic services, legal protections, and even the ability to safely exist in public spaces is being eroded.
These are not distant headlines. These are realities affecting people here in Camarillo, your constituents, regardless of status. Their children attend our schools. Their labor supports our local economy. Their lives are woven into the fabric of this community.
You may believe these issues are outside the scope of local governance. But when your residents are directly affected, when fear, instability, and injustice are felt at the local level, your silence becomes part of that impact.
And that is the point that cannot be ignored:
When you do not speak out against injustice, you are not remaining neutral, you are signaling agreement.
When you do not challenge the erosion of rights, you are allowing it to continue.
When you remain silent while undocumented members of your community are targeted, marginalized, and made to feel
invisible, you are complicit in that harm.
When you do not use your platform to advocate for all of your constituents, you are choosing to stand with those causing harm rather than those experiencing it.
That may not be your intention, but it is the effect.
Leadership is not only measured by the decisions you make within council chambers. It is measured by your willingness to stand up, to speak clearly, and to defend the people you represent, especially when it is uncomfortable, especially when it carries political risk.
Camarillo deserves leadership that reflects its values, fairness, dignity, and accountability, for everyone who calls this city home.
2 So again, I ask you plainly, where do you stand?
Because in this moment, silence does not read as neutrality.
It reads as consent.
And our community deserves better than silence.
