Comments As of 9:20 a.m. on April 6, the latest abduction numbers stand at 1,824 in the 805, 889 in Ventura County, and 471 right here in Camarillo. These are not statistics to skim past. These are human beings. These are families living in terror. These are children wondering if their parents will come home.

And while these abduction numbers rise, so do the deaths.

At least 14 people have already died in ICE custody in 2026, including the most recent death at Adelanto that has once again exposed the deadly conditions inside these facilities.

Just yesterday, in Patterson, California, ICE agents attempted to detain Carlos Ivan Mendoza Hernandez. While Carlos attempted to drive away, agents shot him. Carlos is now in critical condition. This was all captured on dashcam video and is similar to other videos we all have already seen, like Leo in 1 Oxnard or Renee in Minneapolis. This may be your first time hearing of Carlos' shooting. The question I have for you is, is that because you now have become numb to that level of state violence? Or is it because he is a Latino man and not a white woman?

This council meets mostly twice a month. That means each meeting is a deliberate opportunity to tell your constituents exactly what you condemn, exactly what you stand for, and exactly whose lives matter enough for you to defend.

Instead, what we hear from this council is absence.

And what we do not hear has become deafening.

Every meeting that passes without a statement, without action, without even the courage to name what is happening, sends a message louder than any microphone in this chamber ever could.

It says Camarillo leadership is comfortable watching fear spread through its own neighborhoods.

It says this council is willing to let other cities in Ventura County lead while Camarillo clings to its reputation as the council that says the least, does the least, and risks the least.

Please do not insult this community by pretending your hands are tied.

We know that is false.

We have watched other city councils in Ventura County speak out, pass resolutions, support impacted residents, and publicly reject these abuses. Leadership is possible. Action is possible.

Courage is possible.

So understand this clearly: silence is not neutrality. Silence is a decision. Silence is permission. Silence is complicity.

Each of you is making an individual choice every time you sit here and say nothing.

Your constituents hear it.

Your community feels it.

And history will remember exactly where Camarillo stood.
