Comments I strongly support the proposed Rent Stabilization Ordinance, including vacancy control. Vacancy control is essential to ensuring the ordinance actually protects residents and
preserves long-term housing stability.
Without vacancy control, rents can dramatically increase when a unit changes hands, undermining the intent of stabilization policies and making it difficult for new residents to enter the community. This not only impacts affordability, but also discourages homeownership, destabilizes neighborhoods, and erodes community character over time.
Including vacancy control helps maintain fairness, prevents excessive rent spikes, and ensures that the benefits of rent stabilization are not lost between tenancies. It creates a more predictable and equitable housing market for both current and future residents.
1 I urge the Council to adopt the ordinance with vacancy control to provide meaningful, lasting protections for the community.
